Did anybody mention Phoenix traffic? I was stuck for an hour in rush hour traffic trying to get from downtown out to the suburbs. A whopping 3 or 4 miles.
I like the upper midwest because it is cold enough in the winter that everything is frozen. Move to Missouri, Oklahoma, Kentucky, etc and you have a half assed winter with 50 degrees one day and the next day you have an ice storm. No thanks.

Yep. Visited Kentucky's half-assed green-grassed winter yesterday at 50 degrees and sunny, returned home last night to Wisconsin at 1 degree with blowing snow and an iced over driveway.

No thanks to AZ. My husband worked with a few people from the northeast that moved to AZ. I think the longest one family lasted was about 2 years. They all hated it and moved back quickly. It was a combination of the dry heat, high prices, traffic and they hated the lifestyle out there. And the bugs. They were everywhere.
I look outside the sun is shining, the snow makes everything so clean and bright and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

RE: Getting OUt
Look, I don't begrudge any of you that like WI, the weather or any of the other things that WI has to offer. Some members of my extended family feel the same way as many of you do. This thread is a survey regarding why people are looking to leave WI. It is simply my personal preferance to leave WI and relocate to Arizona. I have been there in the hot, hot heat and to be honest it doesn't bother me. Neither do the snakes, scorpions or coyotes. The freezing 5 degree temperatures do bother me, so that is that. For those of you who love it here, by all means enjoy. To me it is settling for mediocrity. I also never said I was relocating to Phoenix, though that is the largest city and does boast the most employment opportunities. I also am aware that AZ has crime and ghetto areas, but I don't live in the ghetto now and I certainly don't plan to live in the ghetto anywhere else. And btw bullet holes can also be found in the walls of many houses in Milwaukee too.

Well, in that case, wannabeinaz, good luck to you, I hope all goes well and you are able to make your move. Being somewhere you want to be is important and you have the answer to what's right for you.
Alot of people gave me grief about leaving NE Illinois but I couldn't stay where I didn't feel safe. Some call me and say they expect me to change my mind and come back. I just think, don't hold your breath and don't leave the light on for me, waiting!

Susancruzs same here. When we left Chicago in 1987 people were telling us we would be back. After living in a big city we would have a hard time adjusting. Nothing is further from the truth. There are some things we miss but not enough to want to leave our country home.

Here are two things I disliked about Wisconsin:
1. Everybody makes your business their business. They are the snoopiest people in the world. The government is the worst of all, I always had a sense that they needed to control my life too much and know too much about me. When America becomes a police state, Wisconsin will welcome it with open arms.
2. Everybody shovels their snow. Everyplace else, people just drive through or over it. In Wisconsin, everyone is out before daylight shoveling everything right down to the pavement. I think the police come and give you a ticket if you don't. After the plow comes buy and fills in your driveway, you're not allowed to scoop it back out into the street. You can get a ticket. In Wisconsin, you can get a ticket for anything. People take all that very seriously.
Oh, people talk loud, too. Especially north of Milwaukee, you go in a store, and you can pay attention to every conversation taking place, even at the far end of the store. They talk to people several aisles away.

You actually dislike that people shovel their snow? That's the silliest complaint I've ever heard.

When America becomes a police state, Wisconsin will welcome it with open arms? I have been reading this thread and have noticed all the negativity, But then again, the thread is titled “ Leaving Wisconsin Survey” so you will find this. There are some who have legitimate gripes based on their own experiences. They are right and just. It’s always good to hear others opinions based on their own experience.
While I was reading this thread I felt glad that I did not go into the Iowa thread and start bashing. Though I really want to, It would be very easy…..Very easy. I am REALLY glad I did not.
After reading jtur88 post the only word that came to mind was….idiot. You sound like one of the last Branch Davidians. Really, do you think before you post? America becoming a police state? That statement alone tells me a lot about you.
Everybody shovels their snow in Wisconsin? Are you kidding me? What gets me is that you really wrote this. You thought about it, then typed it. Shoveling down to the pavement!!! How dare they! Did you not know that it snows in Wisconsin?
I hope you are in a place where you feel comfortable, Wisconsin is not for everyone. ( This statement could be said about any state)

Never found that people cared much about my business. I own my own business and most people don't even ask much about it which is fine with me. Some are curious about the murals that were painted inside and I tell them to come and see them.
And I am glad that people shovel their snow. We have a snowblower, a tractor with a plow and a 4 wheeler with a plow. We shovel our snow and anyone else that needs it. We make sure the mailbox is cleaned out too so the carrier has easy access. I think it is common courtesy.
