Coming from a non-hunting family in the urban south, my first deerhunting experience came via "Wisconsin Sportsman" magazine while recovering from a nasty downhill skiing accident (yes, I knew what I was doing; yes, I did the wrong thing).
While recovering, and knowing we'd soon move to Wisconsin, I eagerly devoured every article i could re: the deerhunt.
One year later, I got to put my esoteric knowledge to use in my first ever deer hunt.
As it turned out, I didn't like the gun season nearly as much as i like bow hunting, but here are a few observations from an outsider on the gun-deer season in Wisconsin. For what it's worth:

* Beer freezes at 18F (important survival tip.)

* "The wind always blows towards town." My brother in law told me that once when we were lost in the woods.

* For some guys/gals, it's less about deer hunting and more about wearing Blaze Oange.
You'll see them fixing the snowmobile, driving around on the interstate, shopping at Pic & Save, all in Blaze.

*In any given family unit, one hunter will fill most of the tags.

Sad, But true....

I love it when people find it appropriate to go out in public in camo... Your not serving your country right now... There is no turdy point bucks in Wal-Mart is there? I swear some do it just so others know they hunt.

My stepdad goes out in public with his camo on as well. At least he has a valid reason besides hunting... He is retired U.S. Army and he's a packer fan.

lol jk....

Deer season is here! Lots of dead deer on the side of state highway around here.

Blaze orange hats are cheap, and at times only winter jacket they have is the orange. Just before deer season watch grocery stores especially Friday and watch the army of orange as getting ready for deer cam.I have a couple Camo jackets and they are my winter jackets but also used for deer (bow season) and if stopping to grab something at a gas station or walmart not always take it off. I got the camo pants also.

Bernitt sounds like should use bow in yard. Tell son's no taking the elk as we know not from Illinois so know the difference but they would be very tempting.

How I wish could do a little red stag hunting. Want the bruisers go near Buffalo county best bet but out of state license's are expensive.Unsure what or if there would be different fee's for out of country hunters.

bernitt is on a distinguished road
Dreamhunter65, you bet my boys know the difference between whitetail and elk. When they were younger (7 & 9) they used to sneek up on the elk. The local paper put a picture of the boys sneeking up on elk on the front page of the newspaper. Bow in the yard is what I do, just making sure we have room in the freezer.
Scotslass - Highland red stag hunting would be a great swap huh Dreamhunter65? Whitetail or bear would be a good swap.

We had a cow elk on our land last year. Strange have 1 in Taylor county. Talking Elk season 2010, not like I will ever get lucky and draw a tag. I got pen rased fallow deer running around by us DNR gave permission to shoot as long as they get heads no tag no season needed.
Bernitt if no room in your freezer I have alot of room or donate to HHH.
Scotlass ever make the states and come to Wisconsin could set you up for some bowhunting. Any hunting to me as long as can use meat except coyotes is fun. I heard mountain lion makes great Jerky and more of them being spotted even have pic someone has of 3 on trail cam west of Arcadia but seem pen raised.
