You're right, there's no restaraunts, shopping, etc. All that's there is a bunch of bars and decay. I lived there for about 4 years, and unfortunately I commute there for work. Lots of smokers in Oshkosh, for sure.
Please don't let your image of Wisconsin get distorted from Oshkosh The Fox Cities are much better!

Well, I don't think Oshkosh is THAT bad. True, the east side of 41 near downtown is run down and ugly, but Lake Winnebago and Menominee Park are really nice. South Park is nice too.
Also, the west side of 41, which is a much newer area of Oshkosh, is very nice. The retail areas are newer, and there is at least one restaurant I like (Kodiak Jack's).
If I had it my way, I'd move to Appleton. I love the mall up there, and there are so many more things to do. But my husband prefers Oshkosh, and we own a newer home here that is in a really nice area that we both love. So for now, we're staying put in Oshkosh, and I'll just make the most of the best parts of the city, and in better weather, I'll drive up to Appleton.

Im thinking right behind you, moving there in a few years. Only thinking though. But more towards Albany, maybe Oregon, Evansville. Yeah, theres nothing there...but thats the whole point. So far everything Ive seen and the experiences from people in assorted towns were very pleasant.

Moving to Ladysmith or Rhinelander and if you are making around 55000 I think you would do fine. Maybe less depending on your lifestyle.
Ladysmith would be closer to Eau Claire and only about 2 hours to the Twin Cities. Rhinelander is about 90 minute from Wausau. Both are heavy on the tourists in the summer.
My husband travels to both places. He likes Rice Lake better then the 2 you are looking at. Also around La Crosse is very nice too.

I emailed you directly Livewire. I live near Tomah, WI now and am planning on moving down to TX when I get my horse farm sold. Funny how we always want to be where the "grass is greener". But I am from the area you mentioned you wanted to head to and may be able to help you out with opinions and hoping you can help me out with TX ones.

Lone Rock Wisconsin is an Awesome place to Live
I moved to Wisconsin from Southern California after selling my home in 2006 at the top of the housing bubble. I sold my home in California for $700,000 and bought the exact same size home, except on 2 acres for $150,000!
Why did I wait so long. I love everything about Wisconsin. It's beautiful, I'm only an hour West of Madison one of the best job markets in the country. The bad rap that WI gets is usually about the weather, but that to me is a misnomer. Wake up McFLy! It's 2009, we now have things called 4x4's, heated seats, snow blowers, and clothing that is warm- not to mention large propane tanks, lol. The days of walking miles in the snow to school and huddling around a wood burning stove are just so 1880's. So cold is no longer an issue.
Having said all this, maybe I shouldn't have. After all, if people catch on, this area will be destroyed and become like Southern California is today. I sure hope not.

neo: Just curious why you picked WI? Boy you really sold at the right time! My brother lives in LA and has seen his house go down about half. He'd like to get out of there but think he's stuck. He loves the weather but the area has really gone downhill.

Don, I'm glad you find Wisconsin beautiful. The Lone Rock area sure is beautiful as is the Wyoming Valley and the rest of Wisconsin. Have you been to House on the Rock? It's breathtaking.

Hey Don....I was right behind you. I moved to WI from Southern California in 2007.
I'm not quite as comfortable with the WI winters as you are, but they're not bad enough to get me to move back to California. And you're right, as long as the winters are the way they are, it will keep a lot of people away. I'd really be sad to see WI become like Southern Cal.

Ditto to everything you said....but I live in stifling hot FL
Did you find a nice place to move your family? I was born and raised in central FL, and have always wanted to move. Since I am a divorced mother with a child to raise, I would especially like to move to a place more conducive for raising children. But, the research is so incredibly time-consuming! There are so many factors to consider. For one, how practical would it be for a die-hard Floridian to move to a state with severe winters? I know no place is perfect, but a state with moderate winters, safe neighborhoods, safe quaint downtowns with good schools would be more than terrific. I would like to find this ideal spot before my daughter starts middle school in 2010!

A nice country home near Marshfield Wisconsin Community Profile - City of Marshfield - Marshfield, Wisconsin if you can handle the Wisconsin winter. Very peaceful, with 99% of the stores you need and plenty of restaurants. It even has a small zoo.
