We have baked goods baked on site here in Chicago in most of the grocery stores. Sometimes, if the timing is right, I'm at the store right at the moment that the baker is taking breads, rolls, etc. right out of the oven. They're still warm and the store smells like heaven. They have donuts and all sorts of rolls that you can buy individually; they're fresh and not pre-packaged. On top of that, Chicago still has a good amount of family owned bakeries. I live in a suburb of Chicago that has 20,000 people and we have 3 stand alone bakeries. To be honest with you, I didn't realize that other parts of the nation didn't have this!

We do have bakeries in WI. Most grocery stores have their own and their are some free standing independent ones too. One of the best is out of Minocqua. They have a 2nd store in the Wausau mall. I haven't been there, they use to be by Rib Mountain. I avoid malls.
At our local Big Lots, which is closing, I found Pilot Crackers. I have a friend who is an author in NH, she wrote about Pilot Crackers and I knew I had to try them. Vermont County Store had them but they are expensive. Big Lots was clearing them out for .75 cents and we bought 10. They are great with soup.
I love Big Lots. Luckily there is still one in Plover and in Green Bay. So when we go to Packer games we can still stop.

I thought it was just me and I love donuts; but that type I never heard of? Glad to know I'm not alone because I've lived in WI all my life - ha!

My grandmother use to make donuts. Only yellow not chocolate but they were so good when they were warm and smothered in powered sugar.
I like yeast donuts better then cake donuts for the most part. My favorite are chocolate with custard in the middle.
I do like at the beginning of Lent when they make panchki's (spelling)at our church. My husband gets prune and I get fruit or custard.

I noticed in Wisconsin everyone calls them long johns. Down south they are called eclairs.
Luckily I'm five minutes from an Amish Bakery where I can get fresh bread, doughnuts et cetera. Oh man I'm in heaven!

Long Johns are not filled.Just frosted. The filled ones are different.
but who cares, a rose (long john) by any other name would be as sweet.
