Thanks La Crosse
I can’t tell you how relieved I am to be in La Crosse. Just to be around normal people who can think, and have a personality goes a long way. I had the misfortune of living in Des Moines Iowa for a year. It has been the worst year of my life. They say that Iowa is part of the Midwest but after experiencing “ Iowa” I believe that this is not the case. It’s the people, Dumb.
I am from Illinois. Spending my time between Ill and Wisconsin the last 20 years I have grown to appreciate where I grew up and the people of these states. Human ecology is alive and well here!
To the people of La Crosse…thank you. Thanks for bringing my reality back. Thank you to the stranger at the Wal-mart who said hello to a stranger. Thank you to my neighbors who made the effort to stop over and introduce themselves. Thank you to the stranger on the hiking trail who made sure I was aware of the deer on the trail jumping out of the brush. (I was hiking with my 3 yr old; he was about 100 yards in front of us. He tracked back). Thanks to the parents at the parks (16th and Cass and Kids coulee) who just wanted to have fun and play. Thanks to the kids at the outdoor skateboard park who had the patients to let a three year old take his first falls and for checking their language when necessary. Thanks to the nurses at Gunderson Lutheran who make you feel like a human not a number.
I wanted to live in a good community, one that respects others. I wanted to live where there is a family first mentality. Good neighbors, homes, schools, low taxes…. O.K. taxes are high! But with the high taxes, I have found the place to raise my family. I will never take for granted Ill and Wis again. You truly don’t know what you have until its gone. It’s a good thing you can always go back.

I’m just coming out of the stage..” I really thought Iowa was a good Idea” and… I can’t believe I put my family in that situation”… Our house has been on the market for about 90 days in Des Moines (we only lived there for 8 months) it is totally worth it to take the hit, the loss. We believe the consequences of staying in Iowa would have been far more detrimental to us and our child.
We have a great down town area here in La Crosse and the rotary lights display is amazing. I have started to look at buying a house and even though the taxes are high I think I like the older homes, Victorian homes in this area are fantastic!
The hiking, the hunting, fishing, snowboarding, all the family activates is great here. I can’t believe how lucky our family is to have found this place.
UW Badgers….I feel your pain. I saw some of your posts. I really hope you guys get back.
Ekg56. We hope to buy a home by the end of summer, but for now we are just enjoying life. We deserve it.
JoshB. When I hear REM’s “ What’s the frequency Kenneth” It reminds me of every conversation I have had with an Iowan.

Couleeguy, I watched the video of What’s the frequency Kenneth. I see a little light.lol Btw cool username, appropiately placed for someone living in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. I agree La Crosse is cool. Make sure you check out Grandad Bluff if you haven't already.
Hope Wisconsin is your new home and things work out.
Good Luck, Josh

I will post some pics later. Our property backs up to Grandad. Its cool living up in the bluffs. I see deer all the time. The wild life is very cool. Nice and tranquil. Skiing, hiking. I love the snow. I did get a new snow blower this year. I'm going out to do my neighbors drive way in a few.

Glad you are happy to be in LaCrosse, sounds like a great move for you. I moved to Wisconsin from Illinois Sept. 2008 and couldn't be happier, I made the right choice. I've always lived near the lake so I chose the east side of the state!
I just got back from Des Moines! My niece went to college in Indianola, got a job in Des Moines after school and probably will stay there. I have a sister who has lived all over the state for over 45 years and to hear her talk there's no better place to live than Iowa. She lives in Tipton.
My brother-in-law taught school, then became a principal so they've lived various places around the state. When I was thinking of moving from Illinois, I kind of thought of western Illinois or Iowa. I've never been very far from Lake Michigan so being in the middle of farm country didn't make sense. I love the lake and didn't want to give it up so no Iowa for me.

Love La Crosse like I've said in other posts. It has to much to offer for its population. I'd love to see you post some pics of where you live - how lucky for you to live on Granddad's Bluff. Have you been out to see the Our Lady of Gaudalupe??- absolutely beautiful setting!!!
