I don’t know how much help I could be but Gunderson is freaking great!! You will want to check out Shelby WI when buying a house….Taxes. There is Hiking in the bluffs, Skiing and snow boarding at Mt. La Crosse. Lots of cool shops down town. I have been looking at homes in the area lately (we just moved here two months ago). I would defiantly rent for a year and check out the area. The people here are great. Nice and intelligent. Where are you moving from? You know….after thinking about it mortgage rates are extremely low all over. Check out realtor.com and zillow .com you can get birds eye views on zillow. How much do you want to spend? I thought our room at holiday inn down town was very dirty. I did not like it but it was down town and there was a cool bar next door with a picture of Kramer from Sinfield hanging there as you walk in. I had to go in. The down town area reminds me of 1940’s Chicago neighborhood.

We moved here in October when my wife accepted a position at Gundersen. She is amazed by the positive environment at Gundersen. Hope you have a similar experience. We looked at some nice neighborhoods in La Crosse but our daughter has some special needs that were better met at the school district in Holmen. We live in a neighborhood called Apple Valley in the township of Onalaska. It is about 25 minutes from the hospital, but we love our choice in spite of the drive. La Crosse is a beautiful community but the taxes were at least twice what we found in Onalaska or Holmen. Here is one consideration I would encourage regarding this area. Virtually all of the national chain stores and restaurants are found in a narrow strip surrounding the mall in Onalaska. If you are like me or my wife, you will be making trips to Onalaska for the mall several times a week regardless of where you live. If you buy on the south side of the city (there are some beautiful neighborhoods on highway 14/61 south of the city) you will be close to the hospital but you will still likely make several long trips to the mall area each week. Let me know if you are in need of a realtor. We had a wonderful experience with ours. I would be happy to send you her name. She was awesome. Very patient. No pressure. And yet, she is very good. Be happy to share more details of our experience. We are still adjusting to the move but we like this community in the winter and expect that we will absolutely love it once spring arrives.

Totally agree. La Crosse is a great city, however choosing where to specifically live can be a challenge. It really depends on your lifestyle. I'm originally from a small town 30 min south of La Crosse and loved it there growing up. If I chose to move back in the area, it would definately be north of La Crosse. Good luck and congrats!
