And people wonder why so many Wisconsinites can't stand Chicago tourists. So I'll try to explain it: nothing says "I'm a pretentious dick from out of town" like adopting a "who cares about the local customs" attitude. It smacks of trying to bring your culture to them instead of trying to understand and partake in theirs. The latter is the main point of recreational travel, while the former is jaggish and rude. If you want to conspicuously display your own cultural customs, then stay home where you're immersed in it.

Jen, you can be a patriot. If you were to move to another place, you would obviously raise the average intelligence, both in your new home and back here in Wisconsin. Do the right thing.

Oh Drover - what has gotten into you lately??
You seem to be in a pissing match with everyone on this site.
Anyway, I am hardly a Chicago tourist, Spent 48 years living all over WI - rural, Madison and MKE. Live here now - big deal.
The point is- worrying about what strangers think when you are in a bar is freakin silly and smacks of low self esteem. It is not saying that one goes out of the way to make trouble for God's sake.
lighten up - whose the dick from Chicago here?
The "culture" you speak of is people hanging out in a bar. It really doesn't matter if the bar is in Hurley or Lincoln Park.

I'm repping you for this and I'd like to add the word pompous to your descriptive overview. I live to please myself not worry about what someone in hick usa thinks of me. Hell many would think where I live is hick and I might not disagree.

This isn't a pissing match. You asked a question and I answered it.
There's more to a bar than just "hanging out." Many of them have an atmosphere, often meticulously cultivated to appeal to the sensibilities of a particular clientele. And yes, it can make a great deal of difference whether the bar is in Lincoln Park or Hurley. Having the basic courtesy to go with the flow and dress for the occasion is hardly indicative of "low self-esteem." In fact I'd argue that the need to "stand out" without regard for the atmosphere of the establishment is more indicative of low self-esteem, but either argument is basically pop-psychology fluff anyway.

That's fine to feel that way, as long as you don't complain if it has an effect on other people's reactions to you in a foreign environment/atmosphere.

Hmm, very interesting! This is just me, don't blast me please, but I always try to blend in rather than stand out in a crowd. When I visit my sister in the UP, I try to fit in up there, too, a little tricky but I manage.
I must say it has always worked for me, actually cracks me up in some ways! I've been in London, Barcelona, Rome and had people ask me for directions. I was on a trip one time and less than 10% of us were from the USA and I had people speaking all these different languages to me, what a hoot!

yea Drover - your right , when I think of the bars where we got drunk in La Crosse, Tipler, Adams Friendship, West Bend, Winneconne, Brady Street or anywhere else across good ole WI, the words "meticulously cultivated" come to mind.
I also have had the pleasure of sipping fancy shmancy wines and whiskeys in very expensive shacks across Europe, Asia and the US. It's all the same - people having fun.
Yea - your right.

The thing that I find amusing about this convo is that Milwcity never came back to confirm it had anything to do with the way he was dressed. He only said that these bar patrons asked if he was from Chicago 8 times. I took what he said to more mean that it was his accent they were noticing was different. I doubt he would go to a bar after 4 wheeling in his best city duds, but if he did, maybe he gave them a lesson in fashion and they were in awe of him!
Of course if you're traveling in europe as well as other places, you want to blend in to become less of a target for crime. Ya know the old standby warnings of not parading your map all over kind of thing.
I think that's a little different than having to worry about what you're wearing or the way you carry yourself in a bar, in your own state for the purpose of acknowledging, adhering to the culture/customs of said state is just laughable to me. LOL

So, did you wear a suit and tie, or did you wear jeans and a shirt? What about the rest of the patrons?
If you walk into a rural Northwoods tavern looking and acting like a city fop, you're probably going to get flak. And you probably should.
