GOOD QUESTION!! How DID They Get To The Highway?????? What really was the 'Cat's Meow", when it comes to winter starting, was Fuel Injection. No more flooding, no more stuck butterfly valves, etc. The one thing that really bugged me about winter driving, was trying to scrape an inch of ice off the windshield. No matter how good a scraper one had, it was still always a bi**h. And as far as the slippery roads--It was always the SUVs that were in the ditch the most. Suv drivers never did quite understand that their braking performance was NO better than a car. Best winter car I ever had was a Ford Festiva(1992 model I believe). Was great in the snow. And to those of you in Appleton or Green Bay, just remember---it could be worse.I hear Marquette Mi has like 36 inches of snow in the last 2 days. Well, I'm off to the pool~!!

you and your warm weather </jealous>
for the rest of you, putting some rain-x on your car windows before the winter season will help you scrape the ice off

And when it comes time to do the actual scraping, I highly recommend the Scape-a-round. It's very quick and effective.

How do I hate Wisconsin? Let me count thy ways....
I've lived here for 33 years (all of my life) and I can't take it anymore. I can handle the conservatives, the people who don't care about their health, and all the hunting that I despise. What I can't handle is the fact that we have such craptastic weather. Its cold November - April. And its the gray, miserable cold. Autumn lasts 4 short weeks. Summer is nice, but the humidity bites.
The 2 nice months and the relatively nice people and the ok cost of living just don't make it good enough for me to want to stay here.

You don't know how good you've got it! I live in Southern California where it's summer nearly all year long...this gets really old...there ARE no seasons. Last summer there was a couple of days where the temperature got to about 115 degrees and the humidity was so high you could hardly breathe...then the electricity went out for two days! That was a picnic I can tell ya! We can just about count on having to run the A/C on Thanksgiving to cook the turkey every year. The conjestion on the freeways makes it just about impossible to get to any of the things that ARE nice to visit. Our gas prices are extremely high here...regular is $3.27 a gal. and higher. You cannot touch a house to buy for under $400,000 and depending on the area...that could be a dump! You can rent a run-down 1 bedroom place for $699 in a really bad area. We probably have the most concentrated amount of illegal alians...we don't have to visit Mexico...it's here already! I would gladly trade with you...our dream is to one day move to Wisconsin. Be careful what you wish for!! You could say the same thing about me I guess, but at least you live in God's Country already...California, unfortunately isn't what people see on TV. There are a lot of good people here, don't get me wrong...but living in a place with good weather can also have it's drawbacks.
Good luck to you!

Wisconsin .......
It is a beautiful State full of manmade and Historic natural treasures.
We are selling our little old 11+acre farm in SE WI and relocating to SE TN this year.
Time for us to retire and live without a snow blower in the garage ........

Wisconsin is in my blood...
I have lived in Green Bay for the last three years, Janesville before that and Platteville prior to that: a total of 10 years. I absolutely love Wisconsin. I am originally from southeastern Minnesota (which I liked as well) but I have lived in London, England as well as LA for a year.
Wisconsin in full of amazing people. Sure there are a few who can be jerks, but in my experience those people are everywhere. A place is what you make of it I think. Wisconsin has awesome landscape, fun sports teams, great activities to do and great educational systems. Be creative people! You are in charge of your own happiness, so it is up to YOU to make yourself feel comfortable and at home. If people are not meeting you, maybe you should look at the things that you are doing or not doing to assist in that.

Don't like the cold weather? Think warmer climates will be better?
Then be prepared for:
Bugs year-round (especially roaches)
Deadly creatures in your home/yard like scorpians & alligator
Higher cost of living
Excessive heat
Smog
Traffic jams
Higher electric bills (central air)
Rolling blackouts
More homeless/beggars
Higher unemployment = higher crime
Wildfires
Hurricanes (East coast)
Gangs
Crime year-round
Earthquakes
Mudslides
Brown/No grass
No Christmas snow
Come on, you guys. Every place has it's drawbacks.
If you think nicer weather is going to make you a better life, you have to realize that there are thousands upon thousands of others who do too. And those people could make your life just as miserable THERE as the Wisconsin weather did HERE.
If not that, everything else on the list above can come with more temparate climates, as well.
No place is perfect.
But there are some things that the winter months keep to a minimum - like bugs & street people wanting to move to the area, LOL!

Here is what I see about WI:
People:
1/2 of the people are nice and helpful.
1/4 of the people are mean and selfish.
1/4 of the people are not nice but are not mean either.
Weather:
extremely cold in winter.
hot and humid in summer.
spring and fall are nice but pass by quickly.
Taxes:
one of the high tax states in the US. if you want low tax areas in WI, live in a small village in the middle of nowhere.
Insects:
tons of mosquitos and other insects that bite like crazy in the summer.
other than these, WI is a good place to call "home".

I wouldn't live anywhere else
I have lived in many states...I have lived in Wisconsin 3 different times. When the opportunity to move to the Fox Valley opened up, I told my husband that I want to accept the job and retire here...I have since changed my mind. I want to move further north. I love the winters, springs, summers, and fall. The winters are not as long as they used to be. The people of Wisconsin cherish summer and enjoy it to the fullest because summers are short.
There is a certain attitude of the people. We help each other get through the winters together by having a party for ANY reason. Whether it is "Yea, the kids went back to school" or "Yea, the Packers won" or "Yea, the Packers might win" or "Yea, the Packers didn't lose" or " Yea, hunting season or fishing season" whatever reason you can think of, we party, especially in the winter. We don't hibernate. We are all in it together and get through it every year. So we party again to welcome spring, then BBQ in the summer.
If you move to Wisconsin, drop by. There is probably a get together going on, but bring a dish to pass.
