Hello,
I'll just add my two cents!!!
I currently live in northern California. I grew up in Milwaukee, in the 50's and 60's. I think Milwaukee is a great city, and I think Wisconsin is so beautiful.

Several years ago my husband and I traveled to Ireland. Ireland was very beautiful and interesting. While we were there, though, I said to my husband: "Well, we do have Door County." I think parts of Wisconsin are as beautiful as many world class places we hear about all the time.

But... there is the weather. I can't stand to think about leaving northern CA with its climate for the grey, cold Wisconsin winters. Yuk! Still, the houses are cozy, and the storms are wonderful in their own way, especially thunderstorms in the summer. And lately I've realized that even though Wisconsin has tornadoes, they aren't nearly as devastating as other parts of the Midwest, and they don't frighten me nearly as much as a potential earthquake.

If you're white, Wisconsin is a pretty easy place to live. If you're not, I don't know for sure. It's always easier to have money than not. I for one prefer more racial diversity in my life.

Blessings to you all,
kj

Can anyone suggest a suburb of Milwaukee that embraces racial diversity?

You have me scared when you said that you aren't sure if living in Wisconsin is easy for someone who is not white. I guess that angers me too! I am a white woman married to a wonderful black man, and our current community has its issues with bi-racial couples, but we are hoping Wisconsin will be different. It doesn't sound that way according to you. My husband just accepted a job in Waukesha and I wonder how well we will be received???

That is what made me fall in love with WI also. Love the BEER, Cheese curds, custard and brats!! Must be the German side of me!
Love those Fish Fries on the Lake in Madison! Been to a few of those. We will be there in a couple of weeks to enjoy it again. Will be there for July 4th. We will be looking at some homes in Middleton!

You have to like the culture, events, beautiful scenery (clean & doesn't look like Mexico, which CA has turned into). I don't think anyone really likes the winters, humidity in the summer and mosquitoes. I don't mind the snow, because we like to outdoor activities.

Default I left and am planning on returning

I left for a job transfer. I lived in the City of Milwaukee, on the East Side. I also enjoyed much if not most of the rest of the state thorughout the year.

While the taxes are high, and you don't seem to get anything for them (I can't imagine what they pay for other than schools, because roads suck and crime is rampant in certain Milwaukee areas) they aren't AS HIGH as I saw out east. Same as another response said, east coast is more expensive.

The state itself is beautiful. There are plenty of rednecks in the outlying areas of the state, but there are also a LOT of urbane yet relaxed areas of the state as well.

The weather sucks most of the year. But some of the year, it is beautiful. There are lakes, there is skiing (not good, but it is there), there is open-water boating on Lake Michigan, there are beaches, farms, hills, you name it. A nice state overall.

Currently I live in Scottsdale, AZ. THe weather is perfect, but the people are about as fake as a pair of saline implants (most have those also). While the weather is a big part of a good life, it won't make up for the people in my opinion. I'm trying to work out an escape strategy.

The Wisconsin people will range from very liberal (Madison, parts of Milwaukee) to VERY conservative (smaller towns and out state areas). Also in between. Wisconsin is an all around good place.

A lot of people complain, sure. How many of them have lived in five or six other places in the last 10 years? My guess is, not many. I have, and I can say that Wisconsin--despite weather and taxes--is largely superior to many other places.

Our friends take several tropical vacations during the winter to get their warm weather sun fix. We will be joining them on a couple of trips.

I live in N. CA also. I'm sick of looking at the trash everywhere and I live in one of the nicest towns on a Lake. The whole state has turned into Rio Linda. Every time we drive down the freeways to the south or north I see nothing but trash and gross way people live here. Cars and shtt piled up all over the place. Most of it has turned into Mexico or another 3rd world country. Sure you can live in an upper scale area but just a few miles away are the gross ghetto areas!!

I think I am lost here...

What does Rio Linda in N. CA have to do with Wisconsin or Milwaukee?

He's saying Wisconsin is pristine compared to "perfect" coastal California.

Sorry, should have quoted the person that lives in N. CA!
If you lived here you would know what I meant by Rio Linda. Rush Limbaugh used to mention it on his shows all the time. He hated that area!!
