I love Wisconsin!
Sure there are negatives but I prefer living in this state other than any other state.(I have not been to Alasha or Hawaii though,LOL!)I like the weather for the most part.A big difference in seasons.

I love Wisconsin

I can hardly believe some of the things I have read about Wisconsin. Maybe I should keep my mouth shut so people just visit so we don't become over populated! Wisconsin is a wonderful place. Sure, we have extreme temperatures...It is super hot in the summer and super cold in the winter. There were only probably 3 weeks this past winter that were awful with extremely cold temperatures. Otherwise, bundle up and don't be a wimp! I have visited several different parts of the United States. I am always so happy to come home.
I was a campground owner and people from other states always commented on how nice people from Wisconsin are. For the most part we are down to earth, helpful, kind, caring people.
My advice would be if you are from Chicago, be from there, but don't expect people in the north to care. Most of us are not impressed with flamboyant, trying to be something you're not behavior. Chicagoan's seem to possess this quality. (Sorry!)
Wisconsin in beautiful! I think you'd like it here.

Do you not see a disconnect between coming here and gushing about Wisconsin while demanding Chicagoans not do the same about where they live?

We just came back from up north. Nothing beats the smell of the pine trees up there. I would sit out on the porch and just inhale the sweet smell of the pines. And the fishing was decent too!

Van Vliet Lake near Presque Isle. Some friends of ours have a place up there so we went. The pine trees smelled so good. There is nothing like that smell. Even if they tried they could never bottle it.
We were catching mostly small mouth and crappies. We cooked them last night for dinner and they were wonderful. Life doesn't get any better then that!

You'd be wrong about that. Life does get better than that -- all of the above, PLUS a bottle of Lake Louie Arena Premium Pale Ale to wash it down with.
I love the Lake Louie brewery logo -- it's a catfish (named Catfish Louie) holding a mug of beer and proclaiming, "This is Livin'." Sure is, mate.

I hear you about the beauty of the Northwoods. We had some friend from Bayfield come and visit us out east. We took them to Maine, Vermont and of course here in New Hampshire. They were underwhelmed to say the least. They found it over crowded, expensive and full of rude people. The only thing they liked was the lobster but even after the 2nd night they didn't want anymore lobster. They said they could see why we can't wait to move to WI. It is cleaner, quieter and friendlier. In WI, they never lock their cars or homes. They couldn't believe that we have to in NH.
There is nothing like the smell of Wisconsin pines. The pine trees here don't come close to that wonderful Wisconsin pine smell!
It made me so homesick. But luckily we will be there for 3 weeks, starting July 1st. I can't wait to stick my feet in Lake Superior!

Kate, That is so funny. We moved here from Chicago 20 years ago. We also never lock our doors. I don't even know where the keys are. My husband travels and I am home alone and don't think twice about leaving doors unlocked. We also leave our keys in the car. A lot of times when we go out we just have the screen door shut but not the door. Our neighbors were getting a furniture delivery last week and she asked me to go over when they arrived with a key and pretend to put it in the locks since they don't lock their doors either. When I go to the grocery store most women have their purses in the cart and leave them there while they shop. In winter a lot of people leave their cars running in the lot while they are in the store shopping.
We are lucky to live in a place where we feel this safe. When I grew up in Chicago we never locked the doors. Now you have to lock the front door if you are out in the backyard. I hope where we live that will never happen.
