Moving to Wisconsin in Early March
New chapter in my Life....I will be relocating trom Southern California to Wisconsin in early March...2 Rivers/Manitowoc area for 1 to 3 years...How is the area for things to do and do they have decent housing? I will be looking for a 2 to 3 bedroom Townhouse or House with a Garage. How are the rental prices.
I was in the Milwaukee area in 2006 for a weeks vacation, but never went North...The People I met and the surrounding areas from Chicago to Milwaukee were pretty cool...Can I expect the same....
Thanks

Not to cut down the people in Milwaukee or Chicago, but I think the people are nicer, more relaxed, more open as you get away from the larger cities.
Heck I hardly ever put ma shoes on exceptin goin to prayer meetin day.

We found lots of friendly people in small towns. We made our move last year and still love it.

I moved to the Two Rivers/Manitowoc area from NE Illinois Fall 2007. I like it alot, but as a retiree (61) I was not depending on employment. I am walking distance to Lake Michigan, which was a big draw for me and I have sister in Upper Michigan so I'm closer to her.
The area has been hit hard (as other areas have) with closing of plants/factories. There are alot of rentals in the area so you shouldn't have a problem finding something. Looking in the paper there are rentals from $600-$900. $900 is 1,600 sq. ft. 3 BR, 2 car attached garage, FP, basement, appliances, yard care and snow removal. $600 is 2 BR, 1.5 bath, rec & laundry room, garage to give you an idea of the range. These are listed under Duplexes.
I have found people in the area helpful, friendly and welcoming. I live in Two Rivers becaise I wanted a small town where I could walk to a store if need be. Manitowoc is bigger but I find people pleasant everywhere I go.
Manitowoc County has a great website! They publish a guide every year that has everything listed that would you need to know about what is available in the county. There is alot to do around here and not that far from Green Bay, Appleton if you require something on a bigger scale, plus 1 1/2 hrs. from Milwaukee.
The amount of parks, walking paths is great. TR to Point Beach State Park there is a crushed stone trail about 6 mis. and from TR to Manitowoc, all along the lakeshore a black top path for another 6 or 7 miles, both are used often and are very well kept. In the Summer/Fall, there are always events and festivals, TR usually has one a month with the biggest being over Labor Day with the kites over Lake Michigan, awesome. Both TR and Manitowoc has Farmers Markets on a regular basis.

Do normal people still exist in California? The fact that you want to move from there just proves that you value community and other people instead of tree-hugging. Anyway, I live in Illinois, not Wisconsin, but I travel up there once in a while and you're making a great decision to move up there. You'll find people up there are more down to earth and more helpful towards other people than the self-absorbed trash of California. I don't care if my post is deleted. You can't hide the truth about certain parts of this country.

Awesome Posts..Thank You all...I'm really looking forward to my new position..We all make tough choices in our lives...I really don't want to move, but opportunities are everywhere...and i feel at this time of my life, this is the best...I have always loved the Small Town atmosphere....and you'd be surprised at what it has to offer...An outsider see things that the locals may not.
Now, the self absorbed trash (Kind of harsh) can be found everywhere.....I just stay away from it...I've seen alot and I tend not to judge...That's just me....Of course, i have my opinion about alot of things...sometimes i scare myself...But, I grew up knowing right from wrong along time ago..So I just enjoy what I make out of the situation...
Thanks for all the posts and the private ones also....
PS, Grew up in North San Diego County...alittle beach town called Carlsbad...Lived in a few other towns like Pismo Beah, Santa Maria, Vista, Oceanside and Presently Lake Elsinore.....As an Adult, I have also lived for Months to Years in NJ, NY, NC, SC, Ark, Virginia and CT...Now Wisconsin....Hope the Fishing is good, The Food is good, The Baseball is Good (Go Trevor Hoffman, T. Gwynn and Prince Fielder)....and the People are Good.....

The area you're thinking of moving to is a short hop from Door County. It's one of the nicest areas you'd ever want to visit. It's much like Maine's coastal towns, on the water, friendly, good food etc.

I left the country life outside of Owen Wisconsin in 1986 for the military and can't wait to return! I never wanted to leave but wanted better employment than I could get from a small town. I currently live in Phoenix and can tell you that I would rather have Wisconsin winters than Arizona summers. I can also do without the traffic, crime, crowds, and a yard measured in square feet. I have property waiting for me and think about it every day. Someday soon I will be back where I don't need to lock my doors, have acres of my own, friendly people, no traffic, and only birds to listen to when I'm home.
