Thumbs up all systems go

Hi everyone (again),

Looks like we're a "go" - officially this time. We are bound for Stevens Point. DH has secured a job there (for real this time), the house is under contract (we lost some $$ but not our whole life savings), and we are starting to feel some stress relief. PHEW!!!

The only things left are to keep our fingers crossed that we make it to closing, find a new place to live, and find me a job!

As far as the living, we'll probably rent through the winter. Anyone know if there's good options for renting single family homes or townhouses in Point?

And as far as the job, I have a couple leads. None are in Point. Two are in Wausau and one is in Wittenberg. I think I heard Wausau is about 40min, is that accurate? And where the heck is Wittenberg? I hope neither is going to be too bad to commute to in the dead of the famous WI winter when the wind is cutting across the fields and blowing snow around so badly that you feel like you're in Siberia.

Here's to the home stretch....

The drive from SP to Wausau is super easy. It is a straight, four-lane, divided highway shot. Although it seemed like they (Wausau) were on a 10-year road construction plan when I always had to drive through... I wouldn't think the winter drive would be too bad for the most part.

Good luck! Hope you love it.
I have family that have lived there for 20 years.
Get yourself a place outside of town with a few acres and you might like it even more.

We hope we love it too - having a few acres would be a dream but I doubt we could swing it now. Just gonna rent for a while and see what happens. Hopefully we can rent a single family house or townhouse/duplex. SP is a college town so maybe??

Anyone know how long it would take to drive to Wittenberg? I've been hearing everything from 40min to an hour and 15min.

If you didn't mind an older farm house I bet you could find a good deal with land and a couple of extra buildings.
Looks like 45 minutes or so to Wittenberg on the backroads.

Good Luck with everything. I doubt you'll want to take backroads in the Winter time to Wittenberg. The best, probably most safe way would be to take hwy 51/I-39 North to just outside of Wausau and jump on Hwy 29 E. Hwy 29 runs right past Wittenberg. Probably an 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min. Longer on blizzard days.

Well, so much for that job! No way I'm getting stuck in a blizzard on a commute that long. That's what I'm trying to leave behind in Chicago!

It looks like I have a job lead in Wausau anyway. They told me 30min or less from Point. Not bad!

Now DH is pushing me to buy a new home instead of renting. I figure that if we try to offer on a new home before our current one closes, no one will deal with us because we haven't "sold" the old one. I guess I'd have to ask a realtor to make sure. Can anyone recommend a realtor?

Also starting to wonder about child care. I've been told to look at craigslist. That sort of freaks me out.

Moving is hard. But, we're excited anyway.

Default Did you make the move?

Just reading this thread I found from searching for our move from CHI to WI. Wondering if you made the move and if so, how you are adjusting?
My husband and I are wondering if northern wisconsin would be a good move from CHI because anywhere NE WI has the same old urban feel and a lot of the sw doesn't really see a lot of transplants? So we were wondering if up by wasau has a bit of a mix of people/attitudes and would be focused more on the outdoors than the indoor mall if you know what i mean??
