I spent a few years over in MN, other than that I've always lived in WI. Cost of living is going to be more dependent on what region you live in than which state. Of course cities are always going to have higher housing costs than rural areas. As for taxes and various 'fees', they total up pretty close. I saw a list once that ranked all the states by total taxes and fees combined. MN ranked slightly higher than WI. Everybody always complains about the high property taxes in WI, but MN has higher income taxes than WI and some of the fees such as vehicle registration are higher. On the other hand, in the event that you become unemployed, MN pays out UI benefits at a much higher maximum than WI, around $200/week more.
