How would I go about getting some sort of petition or ballot or whatever (I'm not very savvy with city politics) to make it illegal to throw cigarette butts in public areas. And do you even think it's worth it? There is such a ridiculously high rate of smoking in this state, that I wonder if the non-smokers are the minority here? In California, the smokers are in the minority (outnumbered 4-1), so anti-smoking legislation passes easily.

LITTERING IS ILLEGAL IN EVERY COUNTY AND CITY IN WISCONSIN.

Another problem is your judgmental nature. You claim that there is a ridiculously high rate of smoking in WI..... THis is a legal activity and whether or not you like smoking this is WI and Not california. We have all seen where californias regulations laws and lack of common sense have gotten them.....and we don't want it here.

GO back to picking up the butts, and don't complain about other peoples lifestyles....that is the problem with your post

Cheers
Well, if littering is illegal in Wisconsin, you SURE WOULDN'T KNOW IT! Geez...

You're a bit touchy on this subject (sure told me off). Geez....

Well, yes, obviously since California has a huge population compared to Wisconsin, there are more smokers. But it's all relative.

There is a state-wide ban against smoking in California...no smoking in any public places, including bars. You can't stand within 50 feet of the entrance to a public building and smoke either. But most of all, dropping cigarette butts on the ground in public areas is illegal.

I'm NOT trying to bash Wisconsin (which is how some of you are taking this). And I'm NOT trying to say California is better than Wisconsin. So please don't get your knickers all in a twist.

What I am trying to explain is why many Wisconsinites have trouble with transplants. They want to come here and make things the way they were where they came from......The problem is that if it is so good in Chicago, or California why on earth come here..

If cig butts anger you enough to post about it it appears yours are the knickers that are in a bunch

I do not smoke and dislike cigs as much as you and I really really dislike litter, what I like even less is broad encompassing tyrannical laws against legal products. It makes no sense

Cali girl, thanks for making this thread I agree 100%. Their is nothing wrong with you wanting to make a place better. Shame on some of you for thinking she moved here and wants to change the place! I have to say there is alot of litter here, maybe not as bad as Illinois... I'd like to see the state do a state-wide smoking ban. I'd also like to see a ticket similar to California's $271.00 for throwing a butt out the window. Just because cigarette's are legal doesn't mean you can throw your trash on the ground... Is it ok for someone who drinks a carbonated beverage to throw the container on your front lawn when they're done consuming the beverage? No! So my point is I know it's tough to quit smoking as I have a grandma who smokes and a couple of friends who do so and they try and try... Smoking doesn't have to be a right, ya know?

Or we could just outlaw cigarettes! I like that idea best!

natrlvr2 is on a distinguished road
I just looked up some info. and actually butts are not good for the enviroment.I do think anyone shoudl eb attacked for trying to speak up about saving our 'earth'.
Facts
"[Cigarette butts] also present a threat to wildlife. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake them for food ... Composed of cellulose acetate, a form of plastic, cigarette butts can persist in the environment as long as other forms of plastic."
--Clean Virginia Waterways

There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding cigarette butt litter. The biggest myth is that cigarette filters are biodegradable. In fact, cigarette butts are not biodegradable in the sense that most people think of the word. The acetate (plastic) filters can take many years to decompose. Smokers may not realize that their actions have such a lasting, negative impact on the environment.
This myth has been perpetuated not just by the wishful thinking of many smokers, but also by the cigarette companies, who have taken great pains to keep their customers in the dark on this issue. It is very common for highly littered items such as soda cans, snack wrappers, and fast food containers to have a simple "Please Don't Litter" message. You won't find such a message on cigarette packs. Although our contacts in the industry are at a loss as to why they can't take this simple step, our best guess is that they would prefer to leave their customers blissfully ignorant. Maybe they think that people will smoke fewer cigarettes if they have to be responsible for disposing of them. We think they ought to give their customers the benefit of the doubt. Smoking and littering do not have to be synonymous, as many smokers have proven by example.

What happens after that butt gets casually flicked onto the street, nature trail, or beach? Typically wind and rain carry the cigarette into the water supply, where the toxic chemicals the cigarette filter was designed to trap leak out into aquatic ecosystems, threatening the quality of the water and many aquatic lifeforms. Cigarette butts may seem small, but with several trillion butts littered every year, the toxic chemicals add up!

Around the area I live in I cannot believe how disrespectful people are with litter. When the weather's nice I take a trash bag (gloves of course, too) and just walking down the main road I can fill the bag - liquor bottles, clothes, fast food bags, soda bottles, and yes, hamburgers!!). It's amazing. Now, especially after winter there will be tons to collect!

But that's not what this thread is about. This thread is about cigarette butt litter, not tyrannical laws against legal products. I'm talking about passing laws against cigarette butt littering. WHO would have issues with that?

I think alot of people don't give a thought about water supply, storm sewers, what gets washed in those sewers in a heavy rain and then into lakes and streams.

It doesn't seem like rocket science for people to use garbage cans, or ashtrays outside of stores. It amazes me when I see cigarette butts at the beach, when there are plenty of cans nearby.

This is not a transplant issue and constantly bringing up transplants every chance gets old.

Susan - it just all comes down to laziness. I notice cigarette butts all over the place wherever I go and absolutely hate it when someone throws one out the car window!! Disregard for other people and the environment - it IS annoying.
