My mom, stepdad, and my brother and his wife all live in Manitowoc. I grew up about 20 miles west of Manitowoc and therefore I'm familiar with it as well. I like the city, although the job opportunities do seem to be big issues. My mom and step dad are having a time trying to find decent work there since they are in their 50's and therefore having problems finding employers who are willing to hire them. They are having to go through alot of temp agencies. Both worked for Burger Boat until they had the big layoffs.
Other than that I always liked Manitowoc. It wasnt too big, nice location on the lake. Not far from Sheboygan, Green Bay, and Door County. Nice places to shop (although not nearly as many choices as surrounding larger cities) and good places to eat!

GreggB was right. There is a drug/gang element to any city, but Milwaukee to Manitowoc is not that bad. There are some of the Gangster Disciple gangs on Milwaukee's north side, but I've never seen it in Manitowoc.
I don't live in Manitowoc, but go there for work about 3-4 times a year. It's an OK place, the people are pretty nice, and it's seems to be a decent place to live (though I've heard good jobs are really hard to come by).
The Maritime Museum is really cool. The only downside I've ever experienced was a strange smell from the (Bud Light?) brewery downtown in the middle of summer. It had a very moldy, yeasty smell. I don't know if that was just a fluke or if it's like that a lot. A local would know...
But anyway, you don't need to worry about gangs in Manitowoc, unless you are buying or selling drugs. Like Milwaukee, you wouldn't end up in those neighborhoods unless that's what you're looking for...

The Bud plant in Manitowoc doesn't brew or bottle but takes in barley by freighter and rail then makes malt and that is sent out to the various bottling plants.
I'm sure that process gives off the odor you describe and depending on the weather any given day, could hang in the air quite awhile.
In Illinois, I lived near Abbott Labs and some days the smell from the lake front plant just hung in the air, no getting away from it.

Since you don't know how to spell the city's name correctly, you certainly shouldn't be insulting it.
