Good luck...I basically tried asking the same thing, as my husband and I want to retire there. I didn't get a lot of response, although a few people were kind enough to reply. I do know it's a nice little town, as I've visited there when some of my family lived there a few years ago. The quaintness and small town feeling is why we want to retire there. I've heard that there is a feeling of civic pride among the people. I loved the tree lined streets, the cute little houses, the beauty of the lake, and the friendlyness of the people. So if anyone out there can add anything...I'd love to hear it too!

It's an O.K. City. Employment opportunities there are an issue. Cooler weather in the summer, being right on the lake. La Crosse, on the other side of the state, on the Mississippi River is a much more appealing community. I recomend to anyone thinking of relocating to Wisconsin, to ALWAYS consider La Crosse, if possible. It's not called "God's Country", for nothing. Really!!

i dont know much about manitowoc except that i ran my high school cross country sectional meet there. placed in the top 10 that day. anyway an alternative is sheboygan - it will give you all of the lake michigan amenities and more job opportunities and other things a bigger (than manitowoc) city can provide. sheboygan is still fairly small, memory serves me to say it is around 40k people

Plus you get the added benefit of the growing 'Gang-Banger' scene, should you choose Sheboygan over Manitowoc.

What kind of gangs...please tell me it's not true...I live in So. CA and that's ONE thing I'd like to get away from!! I would definately go to Manitowoc, but I do know they are not THAT far apart...what, 30 miles or so?
I guess there is no escaping it!

Say--I don't wish to mislead on this. I KNOW what the gang situation is in So. Calif., Phoenix, Las Vegas, etc. IT is NO-WHERE near that--ANYWHERE in Wisconsin. Milwaukee included!! Sheboygan has a handfull of Bangers, as does Manitowoc, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond Du Lac, Wausau, any of the medium sized cities. Drive-by shootings are relatively rare. Maybe 1 or 2 a year at most. These communities and their law enforcement bodies have kept this problem in "Check". Most communities will not tolerate this moron behaviour, and have contengency plans to deal with it effectively. (I know Appleton does). So sorry, for the sarcasim. Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Appleton, Oshkosh, Fond Du Lac, all cities in Northeastern Wisconsin have very low crime rates. Milwaukee DOES have some serious issues with rising crime, and city government there needs to get a lot tougher with it. Also even though Green Bay is relatively safe, the last couple of years has seen a spike in crime as well. But once again--NOT EVEN CLOSE--to the kind of crap happening in the L.A. metro region. Sheboygan or Manitowoc should be a refreshing, new experience for you. You should be more concerned about adjusting to the climate change--especially in the winter. Oh--and you will appreciate the Smog-Free air on the lakeshore!!

Thanks GreggB, ya had me worried there! I look forward to coming to Wisconsin...I fell in love with it a few years back when my kids lived there. I got to visit them many times and I really enjoyed the beauty, and the slower pace of life...compared to CA! Thanks for the reassurance...I appreciate it.
