$150K is the range i want to spend for my next house as well. my wife wants to spend $200K of course, lol. may i suggest the erb park or pierce park areas for "character" homes in the 150 range. pierce park is the older area of the two; that is where i live and my house is 101 years old. it can be hit or miss bewteen some really nice restored old home and some "meh" ones. there was an awesome brick and stone character house for sale on my street last year for around $150K. for instance.

check out http://www.coldwellhomes.com and http://www.valleybyowner.com for houses.

Default Appleton is a great town!

Hi Karen,

Please check out a few more websites about Appleton. You will be pleasantly surprised! www.jefflindsay.com (ignore the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints link if that doesn't interest you). He's a local with many kind/knowledgeable things to say about Appleton because he actually lives there...not like GreggB...please ignore this guy living in Vegas. He is a sour individual..got called on his rotten attitude, then says "oh Appleton is beautiful!". Clearly an idiot!

www.appleton.org, www.foxcities.org, www.focol.org..are (broken link) just a few websites where you can get ACTUAL/FACTUAL positive information about Appleton.

There are many fine social service organizations also that can assist you with your situation. Lutheran Social Services is a good one.

Good luck!

We moved to Appleton from Maine 11 months ago. The crime rate is VERY low and the schools appear to be good, although we don't have kids so I can't speak to specifics.

For 150K, you should definitely be able to find a nice older home in an established neighborhood. I think you will prefer the older homes as the new construction is all stuck in what used to be farm fields and there are no trees in the new developments because of that.

Check out this website as it's the best in the area. They cover not only their own listings, but those of other agencies as well, including all virtual tours that are available. It saves you from having to jump from site to site.

Most of the roads have been resurfaced, but there are still a few bad ones remaining. I would recommend staying away from those streets because you will receive an extra bill for resurfacing the streets and sidewalks, over and above the very high property tax bill. The better neighborhoods are done however, so you should be fine.

My dislike of this area is well documented so I will not repeat our experience here. You can do a search if you want an "outsiders" point of view. I do wish you all the best with your move and hope that you find Appleton to be a good fit.

We are considering buying an older home in the Pierce/Alicia Park neighborhood. In looking at the maps there are a number of train tracks in the area. Does anyone who lives in Appleton know how frequent/noisy the trains are on the tracks near Pierce Park ?

thanks

I have lived in appleton ten years and only had to wait for a train three times while living here and that was the train that crosses college/richmond near downtown. I have never had to wait for the train near Pierce Park and we frequent there a lot in the city. We have train tracks a few blocks from us on the Northside of town Near Highlands and I have never seen a train there. Now...if you go to Neenah the trains are another story, LOL

Still stuck living here until I finish high school. Oshkosh has little to offer for anyone under 21 years of age - apart from the bowling alley and the movie theater. So unless you want to get s**tfaced everynight for entertainment, you might as well go to apppleton. Liberalism has definately grown in the community and so has the amount of snow we have gotten in the past few years. Rosendale is still a problem for people going the speedlimit and omro is also a little stingy about speeding so carefull out there. I hope this late post will be of some use to anyone in the future. =D
