Moving to Southern Wisconsin, NEED SUGGESTIONS
Hi,
My family is preparing to move to the near Madison area. Ideally we would like to live outside of Madison with up to a 40 minute commute to the west, northwest or southwest. We are accustomed to mountains, farmers markets, a liberally minded community, green living - and therefore would like to buy a home in an area that has some landscape character, not just flat open land, and with enough land for small organic gardening, and a few animals. We would also like to keep in mind the kid-friendly features of a community such as good schools and various offerings such as dance and sports for kids. If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts on locations that might work or even specific properties, (even a fixer upper) we would greatly appreciate your thoughts. THANK YOU!

Mineral Point would meet many of your needs, although the Madison commute is probably longer than 40 minutes.

Sauk Prairie, Cross Plains, Mazomanie, and Baraboo.

Dodgeville, near Mt. Horeb
These will put you within 40 min. of Madison, an hour to Dabuque, Iowa. It is a great middle point to many of WI wonderful resources, towns, and outdoor activities. Good Luck!!

thank you for the replies
Would you say the downtowns of Mazomanie or Mt horeb be more desireable? family friendly? schools?
On a side note, does anyone happen to know about the big electrical transmission line that was being planned to be built across the midwest, touching areas of wisconsin and near to madison? It is difficult to find information about it, but I was just wondering if anyone had heard if their plan had passed or if it is in the works?
thank you again for any information or suggestions!

Sorry I don't know anything about the Transmission lines being proposed. Mazomanie did just receive an award for it's downtown. I can't remember what it was for or from.

Location Recommendation
Mineral Point! You'll LOVE it here. I commute to Madison each day. Rolling hills, great schools, sports & arts available, open-minded folks. I grew up here, moved away & moved back. Oh, and Farmer's Market during the summer.

My suggestions would be New Glarus, Mount Horeb, Dodgeville, or the Sauk Prairie -- "Sauk Prairie" basically the twin towns of Sauk City and Prairie du Sac. Baraboo is really strecthing the 40-minute threshold. Same with Mineral Point.
