[quote=Enelra32;40470]... As for the area between Green Bay and Milwaukee... I know it is beautiful... but I don't know a lot more about it. ...

I grew up in Oshkosh. I loved it. There was always something to do...hang out with friends at the mall, go skating, go to library, hang out with friends at home. It was just great. I live in Mauston now, and I really don't like it. I never have, not since I got here almost 7 years ago. People are rude. There, I said it. It's so true, too. They are just plain rude. I've tried. I've really tried. But I'm just not going to endure this any more. I've told my husband do as you wish, but I'm leaving. That's all there is to it. I'm selling the house, packing up the kids and we're leaving. He can stay or go.

Tonight, leaving Festival foods. I did something I never do. I left my shopping cart in the parking spot next to mine. I looked over and noticed a man collecting shopping carts. I noticed a minivan waiting to park. But I also noticed numerous empty front-row spots in the row adjacent to the one I'd parked in. Now, keep in mind the person driving the minivan was stopped next to the man picking up excess shopping carts to return them to the store. The driver of the minivan chose to crash my shopping cart into my fender. :conf used::conf used: The nerve of this guy. He was with his very impressionable teenage daughter. Why would he do such a thing? I asked him. He yelled at me for not returning my cart to the cart-return. Well, I just can't believe the nerve of this guy. He didn't bother to look at the situation. He could have parked right there. He wouldn't have had to walk out of his way. He just wanted to be rude. I can't take it any more and I'm leaving. This crap didn't happen in Oshkosh. Anywhere is better than this little town. Mentality of residents=0.I'm outta here. Good by cruel Mauston, I'm leaving you soon. I can't wait to get out of this town. What is wrong with people?? What is wrong with the society and mentation of the people in this small town?? How does this happen??

I've just moved to Wisconsin, and personally hate it. The east is much nicer. I used to live in Youngstown, NY. The state is much different than the city. We were twenty minutes from Canada and 15 from Niagara Falls. Youngstown is right on the Niagara River and is a very nice community. You should check it out.

I can't believe all this negativity and no sympathy for someone who leaves their cart. You could have walked it over to the fellow collecting the carts instead of just leaving it.

The person parking doesn't have to park where you want them to, their choice and you left the cart, not him.

I can guarantee that what happened to you is not an incident that only happens in WI. When we lived in NH the local grocery store wouldn't let you take carts out of the store because of the damage they were causing to cars.
Tomcat, I wish you the best of luck. My husband is helping quite a few families relocate from the northeast to the midwest. Not being from there they will always be treated as outsiders and they are tired of it.
I find the people around here to be very friendly. I find people on this board to be very friendly and helpful for the most part. I have met EKK56 in person. Her husband is coming to dinner tonight to our house. Some people are reserved and you will not break through that. But again that is everywhere too.

There was a sniper shooting on the highway in VA last week. Should people leave in droves or realize that things happen. Sometimes bad things. But you can't run.
Our local grocery stores don't let you take a cart in the parking lot.
Kate, Steve is looking forward to dinner. Thanks for inviting him. HMMMM.... think people realize how friendly we are. We connected with each other and yet others would probably never even consider meeting up with you. Yet, they call WI unfriendly.

I am very sorry for those of you who have had poor experiences. I feel that wisconsin is like any other state when it comes to "outsiders"(as so lovingly put earlier) we have very friendly people and we have some not so friendly people as you can see from reading some of the responces. we also have some very good areas and some bad areas. we also have some great schools and some not so great schools. and as for our taxes we are willing to pay more so that our children will get better schooling and better parks for our families. and as for everybody drinks and we have a lot of drunks not true. granted we all have and occasional cocktail i have never been looked at funny for ordering a soda or tea. I also know many people who are not drunks. My kids grandparents are teachers and they do just fine living near madison. one teaches in an elementary school and the other teaches at a vo. tech school.

I find that wisconsin has alot to do if you are willing to accept the way we do things and don't come in and try to make us follow what you consider the right way. I believe that if i were to come to your state and try to change the way you do things i would not be accepted untill i accepted your ways. am i correct? I think that you and your girlfriend would do just fine here. yes there will be the culture shock but your going to get that no matter where you move to from new york.

Come visit us and see for yourself. you would be able to see what city would be right for both you and your girlfriend. I know that the department if corrections may be looking for teacher and then you would get the state benefits which are very very good. Good luck

Default Trains help with commute time in Chicago

I have lived in both, Chicago and Milwaukee --as well as Madison, Wauwatosa, and many other smaller Wisconsin communities. (Currently I live in Naperville.) While I would consider moving back to Wisconsin (I was born and reared there), I would never consider Milwaukee. Don't kid yourself: there's a lot of crime there, too (even though, perhaps, not as much as Chicago), but there are far far fewer social, employment and entertainment opportunities. And, unless you're a heavy drinker, there's not a lot of social life there. (Of course, they do have a beautiful new art museum, and it's easy to get to the Lake in Milwaukee. But other things cannot even begin to compare to Chicago.)

Traffic in Chicago is a bear, yes, but at least you have options such as the commuter trains, which you don't have in Milwaukee. Hop on an express train in Naperville, and in less than 30 minutes you're in the city.

My complaint with Chicago is the politicial system is getting increasingly corrupt (I always has been, but it's out of control now), people are -- especially in suburbs like Naperville -- elitist and arrogant -- and the rude drivers are almost laughable. Everyone here is so uptight, seemingly all the time. When I first moved to Chicago 16 years ago, I loved it. But is has changed a lot, and in many ways not for the better.

The upside to Chicago is that you have places to escape to on the weekends that are relatively close: Michigan (which has many beautiful places to hike, bike, kayak, shop and just relax -- such as Holland and Saugatuck)-- and parts of Wisconson (Port Washington, Madison, Lake Geneva).

Making the choice to move is never easy. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. What some may like, others may hate. Good luck, and I hope you find a nice new home that brings you peace, comfort and happiness.

I like your post Amanda as you mention personal preference. It is very true and matters alot. Some people stress more easily and what seems like no big deal to one may be a very big issue for another.

I left Illinois for Wisconsin last year and I am very happy. I needed a place quieter and safer, a better living environment.

I used the Metra to get from Waukegan to Chicago, a great deal on weekends. Chicago has alot to offer and I did enjoy it. I used to do the bus tours from the Cultural Center to the various neighborhoods. They run them all year long, various prices, excellent.

There's pros and cons to every location one would choose, but I still say being positive and upbeat will get you further than being negative and always seeing the down side!
