I grew up in Wausau. The arson problems took place on the East side downtown by the Mall.
The West side is the side of town you want to live in, by FAR! Especially in Rib Mountain. Marathon is a nice small town, but it is a farming community. You will have to drive to Wausau to shop (15 min drive).
Don't you want to live close to your job?

I think I am confused. What is the town just north of wausau, Merrill, is this a nice place to live?

I am from the area of Merrill. There really isn't much here. An Insurance company and a lot of factory jobs. I work in Wausau, about 15-20 minute drive 1 way which is not that bad.

It is a nice place to live, depending on what you are looking for. There is more here than just an insurance company and factory jobs. There is a great school system and many professional people as well. It is a beautiful town with a friendly community.

Is it safe to live in Wausau, I heard from a co worker that you do not want to live in Wausau, but in Stevens Point.
Any help would be appreciated.

My cousins lived there in the '70s and '80s. But since I haven't kept in touch, I don't know if they're still there.

i believe that Rhinelander or Eagle River are really nice places to retire. Rhinelander is a nice little small town (pop7000ish) with an insane amount of boating n fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, even rather close dog sled racing. the town has a hospital, a nice downtown, nice places to eat, a variety of churches, and is very, very down to earth. the main stores are a super walmart, kohl's, sears, walgreen's and shopko, which alot of retirees seem to enjoy. there's also alot of cabins and you can get land pretty reasonably. the school system is laughable, but about 30 minutes away from rhinelander is the crandon off road racing, which is i believe the largest in the nation plus all kinds of casinos are local to the area.
eagle river is also nice, with alot similar. it's more resort-ish though.
minocqua is packed with retirees. it's just full of cabins, lakes, antique shops, tourism, etc
it seems that anything tomahawk on up is geared towards retired people.

Merrill
I moved to Merrill from Catonsville, MD. in the begining of November and my wife and two children love it. I also work in Wausau on the north-west side behind the Fleet Farms and I only have two stop signs and about a 20 minute commute. The scenery is great and it is actually relaxing. I will say that I am looking forward to spring, so I can see some green grass and enjoy my backyard some. No matter what Wisconsin is sure a beautiful place to live.

What about the Tech college in Wausea. Does anyone have any information on it? How big is it, what do they have to offer, etc.

Dolly, the Tech in Wausau has many programs. My daughter is in the nursing program. It is called Northcentral Tech and has a website. What type of program are you looking for?

Don't forget the University of WI - Marathon County in Wausau. It's a 2 year campus that has excellent professors and courses. I enjoyed my 2 years there very much before I left for UW-Stout in Menomonie. The professors are really world-class. I know that sounds inflammatory but it really is true. And with "guaranteed transfer" if you complete your associate's degree and maintain a 2.0 gpa, you can transfer to any other UW school, and you cannot be turned down (though for Madison you need a whopping 2.6 gpa). It's an asset to the community for sure. I do however have friends and relatives who have attended NTC and enjoyed and have found good careers. They're strong on nursing and technology type areas, especially with computers. Hope this helped a bit.
