long haul
We would drive one ourselves, but I think it might be rather long for the kids. Plus, we already booked our plane tickets. I'm open to anymore suggestions. Sounds like we'll just have to suck it up and pay. We knew it would be pricey. Thanks everyone.

Curious what company you used that moved both the vehicle AND household stuff. Im moving to San Fran in June from PA and its overwhelming the number of moving companies to choose from.

Consider a car carrier
Hi,
My father owned a moving co for many years, of which I worked at for some time. All moving co use car carriers to haul cars that will either, not fit on a moving van, or the individual or company are not willing to pay for. Auto's on a moving van are based on weight x distance. You will have a reasonable amount of assurance, if you choose a good company that your car will arrive safely and will be protected from weather and possible more secure: but you will have to pay more in most instance. Personaly, I would consider calling a car carrier directly and asking them for a quote. Many will pick your car up from where ever you live and deliver to wherever you want. ( a deliver window is given that may be longer than a moving van but will depend on distance and time of yr.) You can also have the option of insuring the vehicle, and you should!! One company I would suggest is TNT, or look on-line. If you still can't find one call your local moving co and ask who they use. Other options may be a larger garage or auto dealer.
If you have some one you don't know drive it ,who know, no matter what precausions you think you may have taken. I hope this helps.

Hi,
If I were you I would call all the company's you choose and get a free no cost estimate from several. I wouldn't choose a ma and pa organization but a major carrier-United, Allied, etc...) Feel free to mention the other quotes, you would be amazed at how the price could go down. You can pack your own boxes to cut costs with free used boxes, if available, but uderstand that no carrier will insure these boxes in the same manner as if they had packed them. You could even talk some carrier into a "guarenteed" move cost. This way if the estimator gives you a weight of your household goods and gives you an "estimated" cost of the move this could go up once the truck is weighed. Some companies will give you a low weight=lower appearing cost and then you could freak when the actual cost ends up being more. If you get the "guarenteed" cost at least you know what to expect. Bargin with them, if they want your business they may give you a deal. I hope this helps you. Good luck.

Maybe you could try a collector car transporter. Check thru the classifieds of a few car magazines at a super market. I just checked my "Old Cars Weekly" magazine and heres an interesting ad........ "3-vehicle open transport, west from mid-west California bound. WI based long time collector, winch, insured, personal care, private. PH 414-916-7665 WI".

We are going to be leaving Nothern California on the second week of June, headed for Sheboygan because my wifes family. quoted on some moving vehicles for our trip but the prices are between 960-1400 dollars! That is just too much for us and we have kids. I am thinking about just driving my 04' vehicle there with what we can pack and sell all the other stuff. Any families close by planning this trip also? would love to have some fellow drivers to keep us awake for the drive.
