Stop at a Wisconsin rest area on the interstate and count how many separate recycling receptacles there are. You don't even have to live there for a while to observe that.

When I lived in Michigan, and visited my sister in Wisconsin, she'd make me go out and help shovel her snow, first thing in the morning, when there was an inch or two overnight, right down to the pavement, and right to the edge of the grass, I remarked that the difference between Wi and MI is that in WI everybody shovels their show, while in MI, everyone just drives through it. She acted like I was talking about Bangladesh. I looked up and down the street, and everyone was doing the same thing, as if they are afraid of some secret police or something. Or officious neighbors, which is worse. Then she said you have to carry each shovelful onto your lawn, because you're not allowed to push the snow into the street, even though it's fine for the showplows to shove it all into your driveway. I'd like to hear the supreme court rule on that law, but people in WI just take it. I was remarking to my nephew about these kinds of things, and he said Yes, Wisconsin is the most nazi state in the US. And he grew up in Germany.

When my WI relatives drive to the mall, they think you are "not allowed" to pull through a parkng space so you are pointing out through the facing one. "Not allowed to" is the phrase I hear most frequently when hanging out with my family there. Wisconsin people have a very keen awareness of what you're "not allowed" to do. It's like a sixth sense.

These are not opinions, they are observations. Ive lived in 15 other states, and I see what I see.

I thought you may have been speaking about personality when you spoke of conformity. I guess I have a different view. I don't mind shoveling snow or having recycling receptacles. Personally, I kind of like things being clean. Take it from a person who lives in a state where littering is considered a birthright to some residents despite it being illegal.

if you don't like shoveling snow, Flagstaff isn't an option.

Isn't the snow in Flagstaff more powdery than Milwaukee?

I look at it as Wisconsinites being more organized and safe. What if someone fell on your driveway because you didn't shovel? I realize people here are very by the book. In my travels I've seen so many different attitudes towards the same subjects. A different response for every region I guess. Maybe we like to keep our place clean thus we have some of the cleanest interstates in the United States.

Ehhh, I don't know that I have much else to add to this subject.

I think something similar to this was discussed on other city-data threads in the past. Many people comment on the fact that places that have a larger percentage of the population that is German or Scandinavian heritage seem to be very orderly, clean, rule-oriented, conformist and regimented. (I think many of those attributes are desirable myself- just nothing too extreme).

We moved out to Woodland Park, CO, which is about 30min west of Colorado Springs, higher up in the mountains. Cost of living there is comparable to Wisconsin as far as housing. We loved Colorado...lots of bright, sunny days, barely any mosquitoes, snow in the winter, but it tends to melt quickly and doesn't get nearly as cold as in WI. Plus, if you moved to Colorado Springs, they do get less snow than higher up. Lots to do there....beautiful hiking everywhere, nice zoo, shopping, restaurants in the Springs. My only complaint is that is is fairly conservative...you have both the military presence there plus Focus on the Family headquarters in Colorado Springs, and you can definitely feel the effect. If it weren't for family and the economy, we would probably still be out there. I have also heard that Fort Collins is great...never been there but would look into it if I were you...not so conservative, either, from what I have heard.

I agree with jtur88- I lived in SE WI my whole life (except for college) and moved to Tulsa, OK March 2008. From what I experienced, is that it seems like a lot of folks I know who live in WI seem to just follow along the "normal, expected" path of life, never daring to "step outside the norm"
90% of my classmates still live within 5mi of the home they grew up in, and to follow a predtermined path of life: HS, College or trade school, get married, have a family, live in the same area. Not saying it's bad ,but talking to a lot of these people know, they seem to feel stuck.
When I mentioned I was moving to OK, all the negative sterotypes were thrown at me, along with a lot of shock that I would dare to leave WI because you "just dont do that"
Tulsa is not perfect by anymeans, but I sure got a lot of flack and negativity about the move, as well as putting down OK as inferior in every way, even from those who never set foot in that state.
As far as the job market goes, as far as the Milw area, a lot of employers seem to think that what worked in 1979 will also work in 2009 because "that's the way it is"
Wi is a great state, but it just doesn't seem to be a good fit for me.
Just my thoughts

Many communities have ordinances which require the sidewalk be cleared within a certain time frame after the snow has stopped. Where I live it is within 24 hours of the snow stopping. If you don't shovel it and your neighbors complain to the city they will come and shovel it for you and add a charge to your property tax bill.

I noticed the "just drive through it" mentality on a recent winter trip through Michigan. I didn't think it was so quaint when I was attempting to drive through 8 inch deep snow in downtown Lansing.

One person's "annoying" is another person's "polite". To each his own I guess.
