I lived in SE Wisconsin for 20 years. In my opinion, Walworth County is very nice (Elkhorn especially if you like small town living, but like to be close to the Interstate. It took me about 40 minutes to get to Milwaukee from Elkhorn, and about 1 1/2 hours to Chicago.). Depending on your budget, Lake Geneva is also very nice. Burlington is another decent place. I would avoid Racine and parts of Kenosha.

Hi

Madison is a great place, lots of culture and diversity, many things to do as in Milwaukee.

Do you want to be near a larger city, or do you want to be out further? If you can provide some facts, I might be able to help you out.

Default Places

Thank you for all infos
I would prefer living in a small safe town close to a place that has jobs.
The place we live at right now is a hamlet with 36 people.
The place we used to live in VA has 2000 people.
I would now love to live in a small town .

Port Washington might also be worth a look. It's a nice town not too far from Milwaukee. Cedarburg is a good choice as well.

In any case, most small towns within driving distance of Milwaukee or Madison would be the best bet.

It also depends on what kind of work you do...Milwaukee is more of a manufacturing town whereas Madison is more high-tech/biotech.

You have lived in tiny towns............so areas like Madison,Fox Cites, Milwaukee, Green Bay would be just to odd for you to adapt. It depends whats important. If you want healthcare Marshfield Wisconsin has a clinic that is renown throughout the US.....so they say....it is good(population about 18,800). If you like festivals I suggest a small village or township outside of Milwaukee and Madison (not a suberb unless you wouldnt mind adapting to that type of living)

You might want to try Tomah WI, its about 8500 population, lots of jobs and very safe. Real Estate is a little high. For cheaper housing I would go to the Wisconsin Rapids area (i don't think alot of jobs) or the Wausau area, they have more jobs there. good luck

Default Towns

Thank you for the continued info.
My husband will probably go back into printing.
I am hoping that I can get a job in the area of my studies : consumer economics (Financial counseling). Or I guess that I can go back as a collection specialist or tax preparer. My husband will want to buy a house in the middle of nowhere. Translation: neighbor is 0.25 mile from the house. I just want to be able to spend my first 6 months in a town where I can meet people.

If you want a small-ish town that's warm, welcoming, has a lot of city-wide events going on and great people, and not too far from Madison (about 50 minutes), Monroe WI is the place for you.

We recently (year or so) moved here and it's wonderful -- the best town around. It's slower paced than Madison and Milwaukee, but with a lot of perks -- we have a family YMCA, a number of beautiful parks, a very active community, medical clinic and hospital, community college, nice schools from the looks of things, not to mention a very active homeschooling community, if that's your choice.

Monroe has a population of about 10,000.

LOL I keep thinking of more to write, and editing to add.

Here's a link.

If you want small towns but still reasonable commutes to good jobs, you could also look at western Wisconsin near the Twin Cities (like the Hudson/River Falls area). This area is booming right now, so it will probably be hard to find a place in the middle of nowhere that's still a good driving distance to your job but I wouldn't say it's impossible, depending probably on how much money you and your spouse make. There are tons of people leaving the suburbs of the TC for St. Croix County... must be a reason for it (although the taxes are very high). Hudson and RF both have populations around 10-12k and both are reasonable driving distances to St. Paul or Minneapolis (depending on where you'd be working, exactly). There are other, smaller towns like Roberts, Hammond, and Baldwin that are further out that you could look into if you don't mind a further commute. These areas have more houses available with acreage and the taxes might be a bit lower.
