....been reading a bunch of greg's appleton rants......i believe he singularly had a bad experience and it forever taints his opinion......dont know what it could have been but he's off-base a bit......having lived in madison for a couple decades and now living in appleton, I have vivid and real experiences with "liberal and conservative" towns.......i'll keep this short......certainly appleton is not as liberal as madison but it's not like it's ultra-right or ultra-conservative as greg implies .......it's a milder form of conservatism and even if your opinion differs, i've found people will kindly hear you out.....you can find liberals (myself) anywhere and applton has got it's fair share......people in appleton on a whole are some of the friendliest i've ever come across.......i know lacrosse and like you, love it as well.......i would rate them about equal overall with lacrosse perhaps being a bit more liberal as most towns tend to be when they have a centrally located University above 10,000 students.

If you are so afraid, stay away!!!! Why are you coming back? Appleton is a great town. As I said before, glad you are gone...negative attitudes breed negativity and it is catching.

Appleton's violent crime rate and general unsafe feeling i would say went up by 500% or more between the time I left in 2003 and moving back in summer of 06. I originally moved back to be in a cheaper area to get a house for my kids. But I wouldn't buy a house in this town now in a million years. When I lived in Whitefish Bay at least there was a separation between our neighborhood and the mean bad parts of Milwaukee, but in Appleton, for whatever reason the same "rif-raf" that kept me hiding in my townhouse in Bay is coming here in droves and has me looking for anywhere else to be but here.
It's a shame, this used to be such a nice town. |

5/27/07 ben stein on cbs sunday morning with charles osgood.....stein's ENTIRE segment was on his new love and devotion to appleton wisconsin and how it is "his" newly discovered jewel of the midwest.....on the program, he was given his weekly 10-15 minutes to talk about anything under the sun.......anything at all.......and to a National Audience.......what did he choose as his topic? Appleton..........he enjoyed his stay here the prior week so much and found the city and people so upbeat and friendly that he couldnt NOT talk about it.......and this from what would be considered by many a "worldly traveller" with more miles under his belt than most and a good candidate to make comparisons.

ah, gregg's not such a bad guy. we all rant when we get to greener pastures
![]() gregg, you'll be happy to know that two of the worst roads are being reconstructed right now (spencer east of mason and outagamie south of prospect). there's a new restaraunt in the river flats called pullman's, i think its owned by the owners of good company. near where the trolley car used to be. also the adler brau is no more; now there's a new restaraunt/bewery called i think the stone celler. ben stein was really here?!?!? i love that guy! i wish i could've won some of his money!! |
