WI next governor?
Who do you believe is the odds on favorite to become WI next governor?
My belief is we need a person who'll be more business friendly in terms of taxes. WI has a reputation for taxing businesses out of the state. We seem to be a state that taxes the heck out of everything.
If that's to stop, then we need a person who'll put forth a serious effort to balance the state's budget. I really don't know which of the current contenders that would be. I'm a registered independent so I have no dog in this Republican vs Democrat fight.
Any thoughts?

Your assumption is wrong vs business taxation.
Wisconsin is in a swing position at the moment, with democratic values (health care for all, fair tax burdens, and government involvement to fix social issues popular stands.
Also, consider this:

mod cut
With capitalism returing to its "laissez-faire", or "race to the bottom" roots, the LAST thing you want to be is in a "business friendly state", if you are a job seeker.

getting back to the question - I believe WI will probably elect a Republican governor next but he/she will come from current Republican establishement (Walker or Newman). I doubt if WI would vote for an unknown business type and an ultra lefty coming from Madison, Dane County or Milwaukee would probably have a tough time given attitude towards Dems and Doyle right now.
Of course a lot can change between now and election.
Are you sure you are a registered "independent"? We never registered as a party in WI.
I do know that during primaries, you cannot vote for different party candidates on the same ballot.

Doyle is only unpopular among people who listen to talk-radio. Otherwise he is a well liked governor, much more so than Tommy Thompson was. I believe Milwaukee's Mayor Tom Barrett will make a run for governor, at least I hope he does. I think he can ride his recent fame from the incident at the State Fair all the way to the capitol.

I'm sorry, but I politely disagree with your first two statements.
I do not listen to talk radio, but I am one of those people who don't care for him as our governor.
I also disagree with "Otherwise he is a well liked governor, much more so than Tommy Thompson was."
Here is some recent poll information on Doyle and his ratings, and following that is some information on Tommy Thompson:
"Results from a new poll released Friday (April) show Gov. Jim Doyle has his lowest approval rating since he took office in 2003.
According to the poll conducted by the St. Norbert College Survey Center, sponsored by 622 interviews done between Feb. 24 and 28, the the amount of people who are very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with the way Doyle is doing his job has fallen to 45 percent. The poll was administered April 1-9.
His approval rating was 68 percent in the spring of 2003 and 59 percent one year ago, according to data collected by the Survey Center.
Here is some information on Tommy Thompson:
From 1987 to 2001, Thompson served as the 42nd Governor of Wisconsin, having been elected to an unprecedented four terms.
from an article from 1996.....
Of 622 interviews done between Feb. 24 and 28, the Wisconsin Public Radio/St. Norbert College poll said 15% of those who responded said Thompson was an excellent governor and 58% rated his performance as "good."
The 73% approval rating for the Republican governor was up from October after Thompson.....
ok...just sharing....
oh yea...for the original poster..here is an interesting article on who may run....

Apples and oranges:
Thompson didn't serve during a Depression.
But I think that the reason why Tommy chose not to run last time is very instructive.
