Default What is the real perception of Sheboygan?

I have heard both ends of the spectrum regarding how people view Sheboygan. Either nice or a crime ridden dump. I know Readers Digest or Money or some magazine rated it high, but that was nearly a decade ago now. The people I hear those comments from are biased though.

So, how do people really look at Sheboygan? I always thought it was nice with the lakefront and all, but it is lacking stuff that comparable sized cities have.

All I can tell you from a trip I took through there twice is that it might as well be called Beloit north or superior south. However the "suburbs" or Kohler is really nice so take that for whatever that's worth. I was really shocker on how dirty or dingy the town looked then you throw in there all the news stories about Sheboygan and I wouldn't move there.

For Wisconsinites to consider Sheboygan (or Beloit or Superior for that matter) a dump just goes to show you how sheltered and insular many Wisconsinites truly are. While none of them are flawless, millions of people across the country wish they lived in places half as decent as these towns. I remember one dude even compared Superior to Gary. My guess is that dude has never been within 25 miles of Gary.

We moved to Sheboygan from California in July. I love it. We live on the north side, we preferred north to south, I think it is just personal preference though. South seems to have more business where north seems more suburby. The schools are much better. The lakefront is beautiful and people are always out and about. Every area has negatives but the positive far outweighs the negative here.

Sheboygan isn't horrible but like a lot of places - it's changing. Really all a matter of perspective though. If you're used to someplace like Gary, Indiana - you'll think Sheboygan is a godsend. If you're used to an affluent, super nice community - you might not like the riff-raff that Sheboygan seems to have attracted. Not-so-good stories about Sheboygan seem to be in the news more than in the past but it's certainly not the inner city kind of crap that you find in some places.

You should go visit and gain your own perspective

I don't think Sheboygan is all bad, don't consider it dingy/dirty and any particular town/city is all in that person's perspective.

Kohler might not be for everyone because it appears one has to live up to a certain standard to even be there in the first place.

More generalizations. Many? How many? Just goes to show how myopic many Chicagoans ^are.

I just talked to another guy who is from Sheboygan and even he admitted it is a dumpy town but I suspect beauty in all forms is always in the eye of the beholder.
