My husband tells me Wisconsin is famous for their big, juicy cheeseburgers. The best one he ever had was in Lake Geneva.
I love cheeseburgers and plan to eat my way thru the state.
Who has the best ones? No chains, please.

Elsa's on the Park. 833 N. Jefferson St.

Fortunately for me, another one of it's locally owned locations--AZ 88--is here in Scottsdale, so I can enjoy in either city. The burgers are almost the same, but not exactly. There is a third restaurant in SoHo also. It doesn't count as a chain, especially since Elsa's was the first, and none of them are the same. Similar, but not identical. Also don't miss the martinis... in an overflowing glass.

Sobelman's is killer! Kopp's are great too. Good advice. In Kenosha, some good ones are Shirl's drive-in, The Spot drive-in, and definately Big Star drive-in. Big Star is only open in the spring/summer though.

I just re-read your post and noticed you are looking for "big". The places I mentioned aren't exactly big, but they are very tasty. For big, and I know you said no chains, but Charcoal Grill is a pretty damn good burger. It's a small WI only chain, with a half dozen or so locations. And of course, for something quick, a Culvers butter burger is always tasty. I'll stop with the chain places now. I guess it's just that WI can even make chain joints taste good!

One thing that was cool about Sobelman's besides the awesome food, and cool people, was that they have a camera on the cook making the food so you can watch your stuff being made on a TV screen. If you love cheeseburgers, definately try Sobelman's!

As I recall, Titletown Brewery and Restaurant in Green Bay served up a tasty burger.

Plus, it's in the former Chicago & North Western Railroad station, which gets it extra points from this vintage train buff.

For made-to-order burgers, some of the state's very best are at Fred's in Burlington:

Be sure to specify how you want the burger cooked (medium-rare, etc.), or they will make it well done. Their fries and other sides are great. Be sure to get there early, or you'll have a bit of a wait.

For made-to-order burgers, some good Milwaukee places are:

Elsa's
Hooligan's
Comet Cafe

For well-done burgers, Milwaukee's revered burger joints include:

Kopp's
Sobelman's (and Sobelman's Tallgrass)
Solly's (if you like butter burgers)
Mazo's
Nite Owl (summers)
Northpoint (summers)

Of these, my favorites are the Nite Owl and Northpoint. Northpoint is a custard stand on Lincoln Memorial Drive, near the lake. The burgers are charcoal grilled and phenomenal. But summers only!

The Nite Owl is a cute and quaint old ice cream place that serves burgers. It's a real journey into decades past, but--summers only!

Outside of Milwaukee, there are many nostalgic places to get good or decent well-done burgers. In Racine, don't miss Kewpee, a historic dive connected to the Kewpee doll:

RACINE RESTAURANT - Welcome to Kewpee Lunch

Around Kenosha there's the Keno (Welcome to KENO DRIVE-IN) and maybe the Spot Drive-in (it may be closed, though).

I don't know much about Madison's burger scene, but Dotty Dumpling's Dowry is very popular (I've never been, though):

Dotty Dumpling's Dowry

In Manitowoc is the Penguin Drive-In--more of an attraction for its dive atmosphere than for the burgers, though:

I hope that helps a bit, and happy eating.
