Airports in Wisconsin. (Madison, Oshkosh, Fond du Lac: business, map, driving)

Well, Appleton, is out, so is Madison. According to the search site, neither were going to have cars available to rent during that time period. I'm pretty much set on TPA to MKE. If I had the extra money, I'd got SRQ to CWA.

I am also going to check my company's benefits site and see if they offer any travel discounts and with who.

How "meandering" is 45/41? Would taking the interstate across to Madison and then north from there be wiser--in terms of not getting lost that is.

So where are you flying to and where are you going?

If you're going to Milwaukee and traveling to Wausau, take I90/94 from Milwaukee to the Portage area. Then jump on to I90 N/Hwy 51 to Wausau.

41/45 is a very direct way to take... I've only driven it twice but the roads were very clear. It's a normal freeway most of the way, pretty difficult to get turned around.

We always take 41 to 10 and then right into Stevens Point. I am originally from Chicago and we drove down almost every weekend after my Mom died and always took 10 to 41. I hate driving down through Madison.

You can get direct flights from Tampa into Milwaukee on AirTran for not a whole lot of money..that'd probably be your best bet.

Ok none of these people know what they are talking about. If you want to visit people in Stevens Point and Wausau Mosinee is the best bet. Mosinee is inbetween the 2 cities 10 minute drive from Wausau and 20 minute drive from Point. Madison is 2 hours from Point and Milwaukee is more like 3 because the airport is on the southside of town. I dont think you want to be driving over 2 hours to see people when you dont have to. Mosinee might be more expensive but gas and time are expenses too. Rhinelander and Appleton are both about 1.5 hours away. Rhinelander is seriously small...it services a town of 7,000 people. Appleton is also small but not for the same reasons. Mosinee is the 3rd largest airport in WI and isnt much more expensive than MKE or Madison because all 3 are communter airports to bigger places like the twin cities and Chicago. The twin cities would probably be the worst airport to consider...ya its fourlaned from Wausua to there but I would again say its more like 3 hours not 2 when you factor in traffic. The twin cities have the worst traffic and last time I flew out of there it took an hour to get accross the Missiissippi Bridge...let alone the 3 hour drive past that to Wausau. Bottom line, if you like driving for hours pick those airports, if you like landing and getting to your destination in under an hour pick Mosinee.

^^Every thing you say there is true except Mosinee is not the third biggest airport in Wisconsin, Green Bay is.

your best option is appleton then drive one hour 15 minutes to stevens.that is the closest airport.

I knew Mosinee was closest, but it was more expensive to fly there than to fly to Milwaukee. I also appreciate the driving directions. Got my map in the mail today.

Itineraries may change--I have two cousins in the Madison area, so I might have to visit one of them on the way to Stevens Point and Wausau. I've managed to get in touch with some more people since my first post on the subject here. I have an aunt and uncle that live all the way north, close to the MI border! Adding another 300 miles or so of driving distance (well, maybe just 200).
