Especially if you have a large dog it has to go outside periodically. Do y'all dress up and walk with him or boot him out the door and wait for him to come back or what?

Depends how long it takes him to do his 'business', mine have been pretty quick in cold weather (they want to get back in as soon as I do, LOL). Have used jackets on them (not usually though) but not the boots etc. We generally go out w/ them (and our yard is fenced in) as they tend do 'go' a tad faster than if we didnt (they'd hang out by the back door).

Depends on the type of dog and the thickness of the fur. Big dogs can generally handle cold weather better than small dogs, and fluffy dogs like huskies, newfies, akitas, etc., can typically handle it better than short-haired dogs. When I had beagles I would put dog blankets on them before walking them when it was any lower than 20 degrees out. If they were larger I probably would have gone a little lower before putting on the blankets.

In the end, I think your dog will probably let you know if (s)he's comfortable or not. If (s)he shivers and/or is apprehensive, then it's too cold to be out without a jacket/blanket/etc. If (s)he sniffs and stomps around like it's any other day out then (s)he's fine.

My dog is half chow and loves the cold. There is nothing she loves better than to roll around in the snow, or bury her head in it. Our yard is fenced in so we don't worry. She lets us know when she has had enough.
On our property in Wisconsin, she needs to be tied to a long rope.

My poor little pug hates the cold. Since I live in an upper apt. I have to go out with her. Not my favorite time of year.

I have a goldendoodle.. she has an invisible fence and is trained to scratch the door when she wants to come in so I just let her out, she does her business and she comes back inside. If your dog is tied up, I'd walk her out there yourself.

In addition to coat and size, it all depends on what the dog is used to. I have always raised my dogs to be outside dogs so they just run outside when they feel like it.
