Racine questions
hi i have a few questions about racine
1) what are the best and worst neighborhoods there? is there a "ghetto" if so, how far does it extend.
2)are there any moderate-priced safe neighborhoods with cute, older modest-sized homes? where are they? or is it just a choice between ghetto slums and rich mcmansions?
3) what are the best and worst high schools? what iis safer? park high, horlick or case?
4)are the white people in racine mostly liberal or more conservative? do they get along with the minority population? are there any known skinhead gangs there?
5) whats it like being black in racine? are the black neighborhoods safe? are there any exclusively black communities in racine? or are the neighborhoods split/shared with whites and latinos? are there good jobs there for african americans?
6)what are the main employers in the area? are there many white collar office jobs?
7)is downtown safe to take a stroll down...in the evening? how bout during the day?
8)thats all for now, thanks

Unofortunately, Racine has a huge and everexpanding ghetto....
Park high school is the best but it's in the ghetto-
The downtown is safe. The ghetto goes from about Main St. on the East to Northwestern Avenue and Taylor Avenue on the West and extends along much of the way North/South - maybe Erie St. on the North and 16th Street on the South.
There's a definite middleground between the ghetto and nicer neighborhoods
Don't worry much about gangs. Skinheads are not a problem.
Johnson's Wax is the main employer of the area and is keeping the economy going.
Good luck! I grew up there but don't want to go back!

Racine
1. There is a ghetto in Racine, but there are also good places to live. I grew up on the north side of town in a great neighborhood. A block or two south of my block was a different story. There are new houses condos and apartments being built west of the city.
2. There are plenty of places where you can find this type of housing.
3. I went to Horlick High, and coached football there in the past. One of my brothers attended Park, the other Case. In my opinion Case is the best public school in the city.
4. Racine is very colorful. There are bi-racial couples and children everywhere. A group of skinheads came to town for a rally almost a decade ago --after one of them got shot, the rest were run out of town!
5. Being black in Racine is just like anywhere you live, it depends on your economic status. Poor blacks live in poor neighborhoods, wealthier blacks live in mixed neighborhoods. What do you consider a good job? I work in higher education, Racine doesn't have much to offer in my field, so I work and live in Kenosha.
6. J-Wax is the big one. Racine is more of a blue collar city.
7. Downtown is safe. It's not huge, but it is vibrant.

From what I have heard Racine has its good, bad, and ugly. I have heard than Racine is crime-ridden and violent. Then again, crime does happen in Racine. When I looked up murder statistics, I found that there are more dangerous places. What makes Racine stand out in crime(other than size of its city)?

racine
Of the 16 murders that happened in Racine in 2005, 12 of them probably happened within a 5 mile radius. For example three people got shot a few weeks ago. All three lived, but it happened in a bar. The owner, the owner's son and some one from chicago were involved.
The city is to small for random acts of violence; criminals have nowhere to hide.

I haven't been on this thread for a while, but from what my sources have found,Racine(and Milwaukee) is actually gaining somewhat in population after the year 2005
2005:77,277
2006:79,592
Not much, but I wonder what the population increase is about.

Don't move to Racine!
to help you answer some questions that I hope help and are honest, since I gew up there and I'm looking to relocate due to the changes;
hi i have a few questions about racine
1) what are the best and worst neighborhoods there? is there a "ghetto" if so, how far does it extend.
for the most part, it's hit and misss, you might be better off relocating to Caledonia, WI
2)are there any moderate-priced safe neighborhoods with cute, older modest-sized homes? where are they? or is it just a choice between ghetto slums and rich mcmansions?
in some areas there are quaint little homes with charm, but in others they are surrounded or located about one city block from where shootings take place and dope is sold.
3) what are the best and worst high schools? what iis safer? park high, horlick or case?
dont send your kids to Horlick.. it is rated one of the most unsafest schools in this state.. stick with private if you can... you will thank me later for this advice...
4)are the white people in racine mostly liberal or more conservative? do they get along with the minority population? are there any known skinhead gangs there?
this area is mostly liberal... and there is a mix of gangs here mostly de-riving from the Chicago area.
5) whats it like being black in racine? are the black neighborhoods safe? are there any exclusively black communities in racine? or are the neighborhoods split/shared with whites and latinos? are there good jobs there for african americans?
not sure as I grew up in rural area of the city......
6)what are the main employers in the area? are there many white collar office jobs?
not too many white collar office jobs... the main employers are SC Johnson and Modine... You will probably need a PHD to work for these places, as they are stuffy and snobby places to work for.... and people are not real friendly to work with nor, are any of them happy. Since i grew up in the area, I know firtst hand about that.. I have tried to get hired several times and if you are not from an Ivy league school.....well........ you get the picture....
7)is downtown safe to take a stroll down...in the evening? how bout during the day?
It is getting better.....
8)thats all for now, thanks
all in all, it is a city that has lost its economic foundation and it trying to find itself in the age of information... not sure if it will survive or be another Detroit.... Personally I would not recomend relocating to Racine, Kenosha, or Milwaukee......
HOpe this helps!

Wow....it's odd you asked about skinheads. I'm fa ormer Racine resident. I grew up in Racine and lived there until the age of 25. When I was about 13 or 14, we were chased by skinheads. I was with about 5 friends of which where Hispanic, black, and white. I clearly remember a skinhead coming out of a house as we were walking down Coolidge Ave (or St) south of 21st St. As the one skinhead stared, about 4 more came out of the house. They were older. They got in a car and chased us. Ironically just yesterday I was thinking about "what if they caught us and we got into a major scuffle?" That COULD have been the beginning of a race riot. I don't know about skinheads in Racine now as there are few places for them to get away from minorities. This incident took place in 89' or 90'.
