I just graduated from Capella University with my Master's degree in Computer Security. It has been hard for me to find a job. I have applied in every place and still no answer. Does anybody know where can I apply? Inputs are highly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have actual job experience? Internship? Hands on?

I am guessing you have gone thru all of the job websites? Computerjobs? Dice? Have you contacted a recruiting company? They might be able to help you adjust your resume to make you more attractive to potential hiring managers?

Is Capella an online degree? Does the school have any alumni program or career center for alumni?

Hey...this is the online community mgr at Capella and I just came across your post in my alerts this morning. My recommendation for job hunting-network, network, network. Here are a couple of ideas: Capella has an alumni association you can access through iGuide. Even though you've graduated you still have access to everything on iGuide. Go to the Alumni Association page and start a discussion. Also, go to the Career Center and connect with them for ideas. Then I'd suggest going to Linkedin...join the Capella University group (which has close to 8,000 members) and post some discussions to network. There are also several learner created Linkedin groups as well. Do a search (on Linkedin) for Capella Univeristy and it will pull up all the groups. Finally, Capella has a large/very active Facebook page. Is also a great place to network. Keep at it. Network every single day. You'll find something.

Haha...I love how for-profit institutions pay people to hunt the internet for posts so they can chime in. Usually it is a complaint post and the employee proceeds to write a bunch of flowery stuff about the "top-notch" education received.

It never fails. An "ITT Tech" thread pops up and a person mysteriously joins out of nowhere and posts a pro-ITT Tech blurb.

Good post. Given that many online institutions are legitimate places to earn a degree, schools like Capella need more posts like this to spread the word. I'm a big advocate of online schools because of the flexibility they provide in allowing people to earn degrees they otherwise wouldn't be able to get. Any mechanism that helps people get more edcuation is good IMO.

To the OP, I think you should target specific companies in addition to the advice above. Pick those places that you'd like to work at, places you feel can offer you a suitable career. Scan their job postings, and tailor your resume specifically for any jobs of interest. Don't use a generic resume, tailor it specifically for that job using the same buzzwords and position objective stated in the positing. For instance, if the posting seeks "Computer Security Specialist", your objective should say "Computer Security Specialist." Don't lie or embellish your credentials. If this fails, keep trying. You bang on the door long enough, they're bound to open it. Also, don't forget that there are many way to get into a company. One way is for a position that you are overqualified for. After you're hired and they have developed a respect for your work, you can move into the position you want from within when an opening arises. Finally, to gauge the worth of your qualifications, seek jobs all over the country. This will give you an indication whether it is better to stay where you are or move to get the best opposrtunities.

Good luck!

Can't say I understand your post. Gave a full disclosure with nothing to hide. Yes, I'm the communities manager for Capella, and yes, I do have alerts set-up, as every community person does: for-profits or not-for-profits -- every community manager's job is to listen to what their community is saying.

This post came across my Google alert because it contained the word Capella. As a community manager for Capella, I tried to help a Capella learner who was seeking information. It's what I do. I try to help because I want our learners, who have worked unbelievably hard to earn a degree, to succeed.

Sorry if that, in any way, offends you. What suggestions did you offer up to help this person?

Now back to the real reason I'm here - to help NYcricanpapi:

A few more sites to check: Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com, Sologig.com. Also, check in with local recruiters. The market has been picking up and I've seen a number of postings coming out from recruiters. Let me know if I can provide any additional help.

Thanks!

As a Capella graduate from two years ago, I can personally tell you they do nothing to help get employment. There leads are extremely weak from the electronic board, scholarships are limited as they are go under the radar and the career center is extremely weak. I think because they hire fairly new to inexperienced career placement people. This needs to change. They need connections and job leads to place graduates otherwise the lawsuits will keep coming! Really, the career placement center is just terrible. This is not the 70's with networking and dress to impress notions. People need real jobs and networking is a natural but what are you doing to get people jobs??? Nothing!!!

Yes, this is an online school but really! All the money from tuition and not one real job lead for people in the field. No one needs to watch any PowerPoint slides on networking. Very simply, where are the jobs??? I think you need to release all the young inexperienced professionals and replace with seasoned professionals. In addition, have career fairs in-person that makes a difference!

Also, they should stop tuition costs for students in their doctorate programs who have not progressed after a year. Several people I know are just stuck and their mentors are no help. There is a lot to work on at this school and I don't recommend anyone going no matter how easy the enrollment seems to be until a full investigation is performed.Oh, I do not deny many should not be in a doctorate program but at the same time don't take their money if they are not qualified academically, etc.

Finally, please work harder at maintaining the schools reputation because when most recruiters see Capella, especially the government, they are tossing resumes. What does it take for a change from you- Capella??? Dept. of Ed has stated students are floundering after graduation. How will you change this so graduates can have a viable degree?? Nobody needs library perks or a lifetime email address for graduating. People need jobs and those continuing need a reduced tuition rate with lots of scholarships!!

The end!

Telling someone to join LinkedIn and go look on Indeed is not what I consider guidance from a career center. Wow!!

With the number of qualified people looking for work right now, a degree from Capella U. won't get you very far, unless you have lots of prior experience. Capella U. and the Univ of Phoenix are regarded, rightly or wrongly, as little else than diploma mills.
