Anyone know the best way to go about finding a list of companies 'by number of employees' in one's city?

That's private info but...if you live in a large city like Miami or LA or some others, you may need to get your hands on a Fortune500 or Fortune100 list. Those usually have the number of employees listed. Some online sources like BusinessWeek or Crain's. Also possibly Dun and Bradstreet or Hoover's. I would go to the local business library and speak to a reference librarian. There are printed sources and online sources, but it depends on the industry you are interested in.

The library would be the place to go. I used to sell an insurance product ideal for smaller businesses and would get the # of employees there so I would know which ones I would go to. It also usually listed the officers for that company to give me a name of who to ask for.

There are business databases like Hoover's, InfoUSA, and Dunn & Bradstreet that can give you that kind of information. However, they charge individuals a lot. Your best bet is to check with your local library. Many library systems have access for free for their patrons either in the library or at home through their web site.

City-data actually has a really nice listing, but it doesn't go deep.
