I have had my own health insurance for a long time
(stay at home mom) and I may start work for a 3 month
maternity coverage at a place that offers to provide health insurance .

It makes me nervous at 53 years old to change and then try to
return to my heath insurance company. Couldn't they raise my rates
or claim preexisting condition if I had a probelm after returning ??

I don't know about that but if this company is paying the premium, why not sign up anyway but keep your existing coverage as long as paying for it isn't a hardship? If something happened while you were covered by both plans your out-of-pocket expense would be reduced.
