I think people could work less if they altered their spending and lifestyles. I was raised by a working father and a stay at home mother. We had a nice life. However, my dad did not have credit card debt (used Amex and paid it off monthly), we had 1 car for many years, 2 TVs, etc. We went on a 2 week vacation every year and it was paid for in cash. Without credit card bills, you'd be surprised how much you can save. If people were more frugal, bought what they need and not what they want and were willing to live in smaller homes, many could pull this off.
