I have been working on a team for almost two years now, and without blowing my own trumpet, I think I have been the arguably the highest performing member of the team in that period. There are two other people though who are strong. One is our team lead, who technically is strong (I am too in our field, in some areas more so than her) and an adviser from another department.

However, as we are arguably the strongest members, we may (and most likely will) compete for any further positions. I know it's a bad way to openly rock the boat, since this can damage team morale, but what are subtle modes of competition?

A person can be exceptionally good at their job, but do not posess the skills or personality necessary to manage other people or be a 'team' leader' on projects. Knowing your strenghts and weaknesses in this area is helpful to understanding why you are or are not in contention for future positions of this kind. There are many people who will openly admit they love what they do, but would never want to manage other people although others see them differently.

I know I have the skills/personality to lead. Even still, these can be learnt by anybody.
