Life just got harder for Americans out of work because of foreign competition.

Congress on Saturday failed to extend the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which provides aid to some 150,000 workers unemployed because their jobs were outsourced overseas or their company couldn't compete with imported goods. In the past two years about 360,000 Americans have qualified for TAA benefits, which include reimbursement for schooling and retraining costs to find jobs in a new and different industry.

Representative Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) released a statement this morning inviting Republican members of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources, who were holding a hearing this morning focused on the plight of the unemployed, to co-sponsor her bill.

Representative Geoff Davis (R-Ken.), who chairs the committee, said the hearing was about answering the question: "Are we doing everything we can to help the unemployed find jobs?"

None of the Republicans on that committee or elsewhere in the House has yet agreed to co-sponsor Lee’s bill.
