I just accept a job which I will start a month from now. Well they sent me paperwork to bring the first day which is a MONTH from now, and it includes a background check form. Why would they wait a month from now after I started when they can do it now!? And what's weird is they checked my references before the offer. Maybe it is just authorization in case they want to for whatever reason in the future?

What is the problem? Why wouldn't they check your references before offering the job to you? Sometimes a comment from a reference tips the scale in the decision to select you because it is a personal opinion from someone who knows you well.

Background checks often have several levels. Obviously while evaluating your original application they looked into your background. What questions are on this background form? It could be asking that you affirm things like no felonies, convictions, no current ongoing investigations, judgments, etc. If so, what they are wanting (now that you are officially an employee) is your agreement that the information is true. They probably don't go that far in the process with applicants they might not hire. The timing may be nothing more than convenience and to make sure nothing gets misplaced...to have you bring in all completed forms to file on your first day.

The only reason to worry would be if you have anything criminal in your background. If it is a legit offer, and you want the job just go for it.

i would ask for all background screening to be done prior to accepting the offer and giving notice at my current company - up to you on how to handle for your situation

this isn't true- if you lied about anything on your resume (job title/responsibilities/ etc) it could be captured during a check (although not super likely). I have nothing to be uncovered under a background but still abide by i won't give notice until all is clear- "better safe, than sorry"

Exactly. That's how I feel. I think it's very unprofessional and stupid on their part to not recognize this. Then I have to look like the bad guy requesting this very common sense request. All I can think of is they aren't reallly going to do a background check but just need my authorization on file just in case. It appears to just be a criminal check, but why the hell wouldn't they just ask me to submit it now and get it done instead of waiting for my first day to send it in. It makes no sense.
