Default Is your resume written for a specific job/career?

Most of my friends who are job hunting have one version of their resume and they send it out to hundreds of potential employers every month. They use the same resume for a variety of different advertised job openings in multiple career fields. They decide to push the send button and apply for pretty much any type of job that they have a 1 in 10 chance of being considered. In a sense they just throw the dice!

The trouble is they don't have anything in their resume that says they are committed to a career in that specific field. They instead use the same resume for an opening as a medical assistant and a retail clerk.

What do you think, is it just to much hassle to have six or seven different versions of your resume each designed specifically to highlight your specific background relating to a specific type of job?

Obviously...I rewrite/edit my resume for every single job. Even an industry-wide resume isn't always specific enough. I have 6 base resumes then spend about two hours per job tailoring it the specific company I am applying to.
