I actually think you should look at your current situation as an advantage. No wife, no kid, no major expenses...now is the time to really seek out something. I think you should expand your job search to your field, but be open to moving to a whole new area, after all, you could live with roommates. I would not move to that other area without a job, after all, you could end up there doing retail too, so what have you really gained?
Visitors who are unemployed, even family, begins to wear thin VERY quick. And these people are not even your parents--if you did live there with them, what are their expectations of you, financially, and how long can you realistically stay there?
I once had a job I could not stand. It took me three years to get out, that was right after 9/11. Are things worse now?
Being young and having family to crash with..Take the plunge. The years roll by soooo fast, and before long you are older, and maybe settled with a family and it's way harder. Sounds like a positive opportunity. A fresh new start can be cathartic and energizing
