I started this thread, with the European problem, after all, they have unemployment in some places as high as 30%. But I wonder if unemployment rises in the US, if this is our future? No jobs, no income, everyone just scraping by--except for the super wealthy--

Jasper - if you haven't seen Charles Ferguson's brilliant 2010 movie, "Inside Job" narrated by Matt Damon, check it out. I think you will find it very illuminating. Cheers!

My parents like me around. They don't drive so I drive them around. Asian families are very tolerant of children living with parents. White people like to kick their kids out after college...

That is a very racist comment to make .
I lived at home for 2 yrs after coming home from college. I then decided to move across country and can still see my parents waving goodbye in the driveway. With concerned looks on their faces.
I know lots of families( of all backgrounds) who have the kids come back after college.
In fact I know one white family that has a college graduate from 2009 who works part time at Best Buy and mommy and daddy pay his college loan and his car insurance.
In fact they should threaten to kick him out as he has done little to nothing in the job search dept over the last two years.

I'm aware of this cultural difference from some Asian friends. I heard that in a lot of Asian cultures it is normal for adult children to live at home with thier parents even if they can afford to move out or buy a home. Sometimes they may still live with their parents even after they are married. The wife would move in with her husband's parents.
In western cultures the norm though is generally people move out once they can afford to. This is considered part of growing up and becoming an adult.
However I don't believe that the majority of white parents "kick their kids" out after college. Generally their children want to move out and become independant too. It's not like their parents are forcing them out.
I'm sure most parents would let their adult children live with them if they can't afford a place on their own, no matter what their race is. And as long as their not leeching off of them.

It's stereotypical but one I tend to agree with. It's Asian culture to have the kids stay with the parents well into their late 20s and even 30s. I know countless Asian Americans in that age demographic who make enough $ to be on their own but stay with their folks because they are saving $ on rent. No pressure to leave the house whatsoever.
It's also because some Asian guys are more conservative. They feel like they'd rather be living at home and saving $ than going out, renting apartments, partying, and having girlfriends. Parents of other races would probably let their children stay too, but they are more apt to want to bolt.
Just from my experience. And yes, I am Asian...

For me, it all comes down to...
If you are gainfully employed and can live at home with your parents at any age, and still have a girlfriend/boyfriend and get laid,
then why not...

I have two adult children-one is 21, the other 19. The oldest-changed her major 3 times in college-history teacher/then got accepted into the art teacher program she really wanted-got out of that because all the budgets here failed. Decided to come back home to the local community college-for nursing. A two year program is taking most 5 years to complete-too many students and not enough staff to teach it. So she's entering the cosmetology program at a local BOCES. I can only hope in 10 months she lands a job. She had one this summer as a life guard-but quit because the cheap SOB didn't pay her for a month and she's got a claim into the labor dept-all over $8.25hr.
My 19 year old takes her ASVAB this week. Heading off to the Navy Corps for nursing. At least she hopes it'll be nursing-she is also thinking of physical therapy. That was if she decides to leave after her time is in, she'll be able to get a job as a civilian. She too has been struggling trying to find part time work here-where we are in NY-it's very hard to find something with all the unemployed. She's been mowing lawns, baby sitting, but that's not enough to cover her car-so that's off the road. She's really frustrated.

I realize this is an older post, but I wanted to comment (hopefully I didn't already). Maybe I have this all wrong, and I don't have kids, but the way I figure it, it's middle-class families that probably benefit the most from the child tax credits. Low wage families aren't paying fed income taxes any way, so I don't see how they would lose out from the relinquishment of child credits. Clearly, it's not in our nation's best interest to discourage middle-class and higher class families from having more children. Those children will be the one's paying taxes in the future. Further, isn't current population growth largely due to immigration?

Ok...
But how does this possibly benefit majority of the folks in the aforementioned age group who likely never held a stable job for longer than 6 months?
