One answer I've used sometimes is "I guess you'll just have to wait and see". Other times I'll just say "that's none of your business".
But I agree, it's pretty rare that I get asked this question, so I think it might have something to do with with your region or the culture of the company you work for. I get asked the marriage question fairly often, but it's not so common to be asked if I'm going to have kids.
When people ask me what I am doing for Father's Day I tell them, "Nothing. We have no actual Fathers in my family." - which is true and tends to halt the conversation, probably out of fear I will elaborate.
Hear lately(due in part to fathers day coming up) I've been asked what I am going to do for fathewrs day? I usually say--"buy my dad merchadise related to tennis and photography(his hobbies)"
I usually get" "oh, you mean, you don't have children?"
Than I say: "Nope, I sure don't" (immediately, I hear STOP THE PRSSES......and all eyes on me......)
Them: Are you going to have any?
I know this question has been asked in the Relationships forum but I said AT WORK because, I need to be civil. ;0)
Give me good replies........I'm running out of replies. I need a standard reply.
Weird-- I never get that kind of question. Maybe because my colleagues are usually an average age of 30-36. Many are either not married or married with no kids. There are others who have multiple kids. But in general most people are pretty focused on their careers currently.
I agree with the previous poster who mentioned Dear Abby's "Why do you ask?" question. (It comes in handy when I'm dealing with my in-laws!!) I would venture a guess that their reply would then be "just curious" to which I would just change the subject.
Honestly, I'm floored that someone would ask that question. Not only is it not anyone's business but what if a couple is dealing with infertility? That's a very personal and painful journey.
Because some people had children too young, OR they were under the impression that kids = ULTIMATE FORM OF HAPPINESS and it absolutely shocks them when others see life more than having a spouse and having a family.
For reminding me of how sick I am of this place and all the BS that floats around and all the stupid rediculous questions that get asked every single day by people who have no business asking it and of making me feel quite OK for planning my next two sick days...tomorrow and the day after.
I'll think of you as I'm basking in the sun on the beach, here on Maui.
