In some states like ours you can be fired for any reason, in fact a reason does not have to be given. Only discrimination can be challenged, if you are in a protected class. For example, firing all of the women employees over 50.
That being the case, if you are required to go to a function after hours and worked a full day, were you paid for that time? If the boss required it that's overtime at time and a half. Check your state law on it. Unless you are salaried, then you are stuck.
For most of us the job description will have a line such as "and other duties as assigned" that cover just about anything, but there are people that abuse it.
