Anytime, someone requires something for which they don't actually screen or test before hiring, I think it's a mistake. You open yourself for liability and are wasting time.

All the want ads I've seen for mailroom clerks list the heavy lifting requirement. Too bad for me...I wanted to try my hand at that, but companies wouldn't bother hiring lil' ol' me.

If you say in an interview when asked that you can't lift 80 pounds by yourself, does that mean they will not offer you the job? It wasn't in the description when the job was posted.

I am a female, I work out regularly, and can lift a pretty hefty amount, BUT when I've seen these ads I always assumed they were code for "male." If I saw one that interested me enough I'd apply anyways.
