I work at Albertsons, how do I know if the employer likes me or doesn't?
I am two weeks into the job. So far they changed my schedule on me once and I covered two 9 hr days. And also worked for somebody when some one called in sick. Before I started the job I let them know I have school two days a week 6pm-9pm. They totally forget and today they expect me to find some one to cover the shifts. Well I found some one for Wednesday, but not Monday.
I also already got an employee recognition card for doing a great job on a clean up. I have also had some co-workers say I did a great job. And only had one customer complaint and the complaint was I walked in on a girl while she was washing her hands. And I knocked and saw the door was open when I went in to clean the girls bathroom.
Anyways any tips would be great. I am 20 and have my AA, and taking classes to transfer into my local university so that I don't get in debt while going to college. I'm not a big spendor and I been starting to save up money from this job.
Thanks!

Hi,
It sounds like you're doing just fine. No news is good news. Just continue to do well with any assignments they give you and kindly remind them about your school schedule.
Keep up the good work and continue to save money.
Ron

My current bartender/server really is a sweetheart. His fulltime job is as a fry boy in the back with a national "restaurant" chain which promotes scantily-clad attractive young ladies to sell deep fried wings, sandwiches, etc.
I really like this young man but the management team at this chain often treats him very badly. He's been working for them for a couple of years, always is there on time, has no medical bennnies and, like all the girls who come and go, is an expendable. They know he now works for me part-time, they know he doesn't speak up for himself. On an average he makes 2-3 times more working for me four nights a week on a max 6 hour shift than he makes slaving for them for 35 hours a week.
We've talked about this for some time now and I'm closing my place at the end of the this month. I admire him for staying in this dead-end position but when he first called me a month or so ago and twice told me he would be late getting here because he couldn't get out of there, I finally started the kindly lecture routine. And he's finally listening.
They've dicked around with his schedule and cut back his hours, only to find that the brilliant newcomers come and go like the Trade Winds and then put him back to fulltime/overtime. When he finally had the balls (after our many chats on the subject) to quietly say "no" because he had to be at his second job here at such and such a time, one of the new hotshot young managers sarcastically told him he needed to get his priorities straight. He said nothing, just left when his scheduled shift ended.
The almost final straw occurred recently when, after working a full day there and then coming to work with me for the evening, he was asked to come by AFTER he finished up here around 10-11PM and go back to clean up after the place was closed. Once he did it, the second time he told them no with no explanation. "I can't do that"! No thunderbolts came down and (God forbid) one of the managers just might have had to do the job.
The last-minute schedule changing typifies poor management. All I can tell you, the city, is that you need to stick up for yourself. Do your job (and it seems from what you said that you're doing exactly that) but just be firm about your availability and don't let these dips take advantage of you.
There are are so many threads on this forum which revolve around the love/hate relationship between employers and employees. I've been on both sides of the fence and know full well that for as many crappy employers there are an equal number of crappy employees. Hang in there. Never rant or rave, keep a clear head and approach everything calmly and in a quiet tone (sotto voce!). I wish you all the very best. Cheers!

You forgot to mention 35hrs working 6 days. I used to work for Albertson's while going to school, and can tell you this management does not care. It was a constant battle, and when you complain you will more than likely get shafted working odd hours or starting at 5am when your shift the previous night ended at 12am. I remember once I was getting 40hrs a week, working 8hr shifts. Told my manager I needed Tues/Thurs off for class and the next week got 24hr working like 5days. It sucked since you needed 24hr to keep your health insurance going, 24 was the minimum. So you ended up coming in for 4x 5hr shifts and a BS 4hr shift, which wouldn't really suck that bad but I started at 2 or 4am. So I'd honestly rather sleep than come in for 4hr.
The way I see it is some managers are cool, the ones in their late/mid 40s are pretty laid back, as the opportunity for them to move up the corporate ladder is pretty slim. Its the young managers that can be pricks, basically all they care about is making themselves look good to corporate. Also many wish they had done more with their lives, instead of working at albertsons for X number of years, so they are very negative individuals, at least in my experience.
