I would like to ultimately move to Chicago from Michigan in October and I have been putting off applying to jobs because most job ads I have seen need people immediately and I can't afford to move until the fall.
My question to all of you is when should I start applying to jobs? I know finding a job right now is a very tough process and I want to give myself enough time to successfully secure one before I move, however I don't want to have to tell an employer that I have to delay my start date a couple months and miss out on a job opportunity.
I didn't think it was that bad of a question haha. I was just wondering if I should start applying to jobs now and just write in my cover letter that I can't start until October, or wait until maybe September to apply to jobs.

A lot of applications ask you for the date that you are available to begin working. You could indicate October ... on the application. If not, you also could mention this in the cover letter. Not all employers need the employee to begin immediately and sometimes the hiring process can take a few months. I wish you the best.

Thanks in advance.
Typically employers expect for you to give 2 weeks notice. Then add 2 weeks from the day you apply to an offer(application processing times and multiple interviews), that puts you at Sept already. And that is if you apply for a job on Monday you interview get an offer etc. October is not far away. I would apply immediately.
Start now....I took me two months from resume submission to getting through multiple interviews and skill tests to finally get offers. Good luck and hope you find the job you are looking for. I have been to Chicago several times for fun. NY has nothing on Chi Town, I love it there!

Right now I'm doing freelance work so my schedule is very open for any interviews or apartment searching that I have to do.
I made the move to Chicago from Michigan. Feel free to DM with any Q's. Nice watching my home state sink from afar... What type of work are you looking to do here? Business is holding up here, but many are indeed struggling. Seems businesses know the drill here though... Invest and expand during the down times on the cheap.
If you have time to post here, you have time to start looking for jobs NOW. The market is abysmally tough, you shoulda started yesterday!
