We are in a Depression. An 84 year old man agreed with me. He said they did'nt have unemployment and welfare. These things are what is keeping America afloat.
It's hard to say. Who knows what can happen. A former colleague called me yesterday and his co, a small co, is filing for bankruptcy. Next week is his last week and he'll be on the unemployment line. That's scary stuff. My co is pretty old and pretty large. They're currently expanding and have been doing very well during the recession. I'm very focused on doing well at my job and staying put.

Exactly. There are too many factors involved. Some companies are doing well and / or growing, others are slashing jobs or closing their doors altogether...and the reasons may not necessarily be tied to the larger, economic picture.

Yea, my friend suspects funny business at his co. In March they were actually expanding. I think there were a total of 30 employees in the place, but they were looking to hire. I interviewed there to see what is out there. Soon after they started having inspection problems. Inspectors came in found a problem or two, so they would fix it and file the report. A month later new inspectors would be back with no knowledge of past inspections and they would find new problems or simply didn't acknowledge past fixes. Compliance issues were reported, the drugs leaving the facility couldn't get FDA approval, clients were notified, and they're all done. All within just a few months.
Without getting into exactly what I do, my job would be safer if the economy doesn't rebound. Unfortunately some of my business associates would fall on tough times. I'd rather have a stable economy than a boom, because the boom is always followed by a fall.
Currently, the business (I work for a movie studio) is doing fine - hit the billion-dollar box office mark earlier than last year, and the international box office is surprisingly good. Our little technical team is investing heavily in new hardware that needs to be implemented, and that is hands-on work, not that easy to ship overseas.
Basically, entertainment tends to do OK in down times, so with a bit of luck...
