Fired from last Job. Need Help
Okay, so I was fired last year from Target for theft. I was stupid and decided to steal something... I really regret it and my manager saw it but he said he had no choice but to let me go. I left on a good note with him though because he said he knew I was a good kid who made a bad choice and that he wants to see me succeed and stuff like that. I was cooperative, confessed, gave a written statement, apologized multiple times, etc. The Police Department said that sense I was so cooperative I could take this Stationary Adjustment Class and get the whole thing expunged from my record and do 10 hours of community service work. Well that was all done without a problem and I got the whole thing expunged from my record.
I have been trying extremely hard to get a new job recently but had little to no luck. Today I had an interview at Office Depot. I was offered the job and have to get a drug test and pass a background check. I know that my record has nothing on it but I am worried about what Target might tell them.
I am in dire need of a job and I honestly cannot lose this chance. My dad told me that most places will only confirm dates of employment and salary to avoid and legal problems even though there is no law stopping them from saying that I was fired for theft.
My question is, does anyone know what Target tells employers and whether or not there is a good chance of them revealing this information? This is a really good chance for me because it works great with my school schedule and I am going to be going to college soon and need a job. I am in debt to people in my family who lent my money and need to pay them back badly. Also, if they do find out that I was fired, will this cause Office Depot to not give me the job?
Any help is greatly appreciated... Thankyou!!

It is likely your record at Target will say "Fired for theft", unless your manager was nice enough to make it a resignation. While it is great you acknowledge you did wrong and took steps to correct your mistake, it is unlikely in a 10% unemploymeny economy that Office Depot will hire someone who stole from their previous employer when they have hundreds of applications from those who did not steal.
That is if they actually call Target as part of the background check. Good luck.

My problem though is whether or not Target will disclose this information... Because most major companies will avoid disclosing anything other than employment dates and pay rate to avoid legal problems..
Do you think this is true?

I would try for a job at a small place that doesn't pay for background checks. I believe there is a database of employees who have stolen from their employer/retailers that companies use to screen job applicants.

If its not going to be on your background check, then why in the world did you tell them you worked at Target? It'd be a lot easier explaining a gap in employment than a theft.
Anyway, it's hard to say what Target will tell them, although I do tend to agree with your Dad.

When I was a supervisor at BellSouth, all inquiries were directed to HR. All HR said was title of job and dates of employment.

I'm sorry, I don't have sympathy for people who steal things. You made your bed and now you have to lay in it.

That's mature. Everyone messes up. I acknowledge I did something really stupid, but one stupid mistake shouldn't mean I'm punished for the rest of my life. I payed my dues to society and payed back the money I owed and fixed everything up. I was cooperative and did everything they wanted.
Last time I checked no human is perfect, so don't act all self righteous. I made my choice and regret it and payed for it. I got the punishment I was given. This is close to saying that because a teenager got one speeding ticket he shouldn't be allowed to drive ever again.
To everyone else who gave me real information and helped me, thank you. I appreciate it very much. I never put them on past employment. They asked me if I had worked anywhere and I mentioned I worked at target for a while but they never wrote down a note about it so I don't think they will be checking up on it.

In addition to dates of employment and job title, almost every company for which I've worked also has been asked if that person would be available for re-hire. YES or NO is all a company usually responds -- but, if the answer is NO, prospective employers will often pass on the applicant.

You violated the trust between you and your employer. That is not something that companies will "get over" just because you made restitution. You have to regain that trust over time. If you stole something once then you may do it again given the opportunity. You have already broken that barrier between "right and wrong".
