Does volunteering count on a resume once you enter back into the workforce? Will employers recognize that as actual work?

Depending upon the job it is a definite bonus to show you are involved in the community. Sales is one of those jobs, because you are constantly representing the company you work for and it makes them look good too. It also shows you are well rounded and have made commitments like this so you are grounded and can handle more than one thing at a time. We always saw it as a bonus when reviewing resumes.

My volunteering has been very helpful on my resume. It also just makes me a better person in general.

It depends on the hiring manager if they think volunteering is actual work, but what would you rather have on your resume if you are between jobs. Nothing or something?

One great aspect about volunteering is that you get to meet people. And meeting people is the next step to networking and networking with people who know people that have jobs is a great way to land a job.

And as Aptor hours as stated: it makes you a better person.

Definitely and if you are volunteering in a field related to the jobs you're seeking make sure it's mentioned in the cover letter and resume.

You never know what will catch someone's eye as they read you resume, application, etc. I was selected one time over a bunch of other people (some whose work experience was better than mine) because I was a Den Mother for Boy Scouts! The manager was a big believer in Boy Scouts, so he thought I'd be a good match.

So, yes put down anything volunteering you do as well as other community activities, even PTA.
