I got hired onto what might be a sinking ship about a month ago. Large corporation that has been struggling for several years. Pay is really good, and if all goes well, it is a great opportunity. Reading up on the situation since I got hired, and there has been a lot of bad news.

What is there to look out for in this situation? It is in transportation, so the company has a lot of assets, which makes a buy out more likely

My current company has been bought out 3 times. Things that typically happened were upper management changes (new managers hired/others resigning) and lots of meetings and emails about reorganization.

I can very comfortably afford where I am living now, but I want to get a new (nicer) apartment closer to work, but I don't wanna get laid off, and then stuck on unemployment and have difficulty making payments.

I'd stay where you are for now. Hopefully it goes well for you, but ask the thousands of people that got let go by WAMU when Chase took them over.
