There are a LOT of people who went to school to become an X...
for all sorts of reasons aside from them really wanting to be an X.
Some of that group includes doctors.
I went to school to become President of the United States. After graduation, I came across this book that said you need to be at least 35 to do that and I'm only 25. Dang it! What am I going to do for 10 years?
People are always changes professions thinking something else will be better paying less stressful, whatever. I do not personally know any doctors that left the profession to persure other things. I do know quite a few that have retired early in the last five years due to the economy, and the perceived worsening lot of the medical profession, at least from their point of view anyways.
The thing is, every job has become more demanding these days. Companies are squeezing every bit of productivity out of their workers, and many times, they are paying them either the same or less. Some people are left scratching their heads and wondering, what happened? Because of the changes, people are seeking higher ground. There really isn't any higher ground though. If there was, people would be flocking to it, like with the whole nursing craze. Hey, I fell for it. Luckily I realized it was just more of the same, except you wear scrubs.
We're going to see lots of career changing going on. We're also going to see a lot of displaced workers, as well as higher burnout rates. This stuff puts a lot of strain on people, and some people aren't wired to deal with the stress of the modern day workplace. I thrive on challenges and high workloads, but I'm the exception to the rule. People with the attitude that was common in the workplace 30 years ago are going to get crushed, and changing careers won't help.
doctors are often Highly intelligent people with influential contacts and can transition into a higher paying career much easier than most. Ive seen doctors go work for hedge funds and other types of financial businesses and make triple the money if not more
I know a few doctors who run consulting businesses--still related to the medical field, but not practicing. They advise other doctors about how to organize their practices, how and where to expand, etc.
And I know another doctor who's now an artist.
And yes, there are a number of politicians that were once doctors. Howard Dean and Senator Frist were both doctors.
my cousin knew that being a doctor was not for him in his second year of med school -
Could you explain why he thought that?
